March 2010 News & Events At The Westport Senior Center

Meet The Candidates April 7th

Before we know it, spring will be here with all of the promise of warmer weather and crocuses blooming.

It is also the time that is set aside for Town Business.  Don’t forget that there is a Special Town Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 9th. It is very important to be an informed voter.  Tuesday, April 13th is Election Day.  Come to the Senior Center on April 7th at 1:00 p.m. to hear the candidates discuss the issues facing the Town.  It will also be a good opportunity for you to ask questions of the Town Administrator and the Superintendent of Schools about the proposed override of Proposition 2 ½.

                                                                                                                         Mary Ellen Gomes, Director

AARP Tax-Aide Program

Again this year, a volunteer tax-aide, Jean-Louis Clapin, will be at the Westport Senior Center to help Westport residents over 60 years of age prepare their simple 2009 tax returns.  Mr. Clapin will be at the Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays, by appointment only, through April 14, 2010.

Please contact Mr. Clapin at (508) 672-5683 for an appointment.

This program is offered by the AARP Foundation in conjunction with the IRS, in co-operation with the COA.

Transportation Corner - Updates & Reminders  From The WCOA Transportation Department

Appointments for transportation must be made in advance to provide quality transportation for our clients. Appointments can be taken between 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Beginning March 1st 2010, appointments cannot be made for the following day.

Please call at least 1 week prior to your appointment. For example, if you need an appointment for a Wednesday, you must call to schedule it with us no later than the Wednesday before your appointment. This gives us time to prepare our schedules in a more effective manner. Please keep this in mind when scheduling you’re appointments.

Donations- During these tough economic times your support is more important than ever to help keep the transportation service that the WCOA provides going. A $5 donation is suggested a round-trip ride, and $3 for a one-way transport. Also donations may be made to the Town of Westport. Thank You Again for your continued support for such a great service!

Elder Law Today by Surprenant & Beneski, P.C.

Ten Asset Protection Mistakes

Mistake #1        Relying only on a Will or a Living Trust. A Will takes effect only at your death and a Living Trust will not protect your assets from the government and nursing homes.

Mistake #2        Relying on Medicare or Health Insurance. Neither Medicare nor health insurance pays for the cost of long term in a nursing home. With the average cost in Massachusetts approximately $9,000 without a Plan most families will quickly run through their life savings

Mistake #3        Transferring all assets to children. This almost always creates a five-year period of ineligibility for Medicaid.  The tax consequences can be devastating.

Mistake #4        Placing all assets into joint ownership with other family member. This also creates a five-year period of ineligibility for Medicaid and can create unfortunate legal problems for families.

Mistake #5        Selling the family home to pay for nursing home care. This is almost never required.  Yet many still believe that a person must sell his home to pay the nursing home.

Mistake #6        Not taking Medicaid estate recovery seriously.  The government can and does sell your home after your death to recoup benefits paid out on your behalf.

Mistake #7        Applying for a guardianship. This court-supervised method of dealing with a person’s incapacity is time-consuming, costly, burdensome and restrictive. With proper planning, you would avoid the need to go to court.

Mistake #8        Relying on family members to “do the right thing” when critical health care and financial decisions need to be made. In the absence of a Plan to protect assets and other planning documents, this is an awful burden to place on your family.

Mistake #9        Not seeking the advice of a specialist in elder law and asset protection planning.  Medicaid and other government benefits programs are a highly complex area of the law, which varies from state to state.  Very few attorneys and advisors know and understand the laws and rules that apply.

Mistake #10      Doing nothing. Unless you have no assets to protect or you are unconcerned about how decisions will be made in the event of your disability or incapacity, you should take steps now to protect yourself.

Mistake #11      Trying to prepare your estate plan yourself.  The laws are too complex.  You are likely to find out that your assets are not protected when a problem arises and it is too late to fix.

Mistake #12      Create your Estate Plan and then forgetting about it.  Your life will change and your estate plan should be reviewed at least every three years to ensure that that it will work when you need it.

Hi and welcome to Computer Classes at Westport COA. My name is Joan Hale, and I am here to help you get the most out of your PC. I want you to excel in how you use your PC, be it Internet, surfing, emailing, word processing, or just as simple as using the mouse.

I hope this training will help break down the “Typical Barriers” and “Obstacles” which are responsible for stopping the majority of senior citizens learning the value in owning a PC and getting online. Keep in mind, “You Cannot Break the Computer”. So let’s have some fun and learn together. Call Me at the COA at (508) 636-1026 Monday thru Wednesday to set up a training time.
