t0.jpgThe flag at the Westport Police Station is flying at half mast. Under bleak skies and swirling snow Westport firefighters cloaked the police station with black bunting. A lone police cruiser, also draped in black and flowers, sat as a silent memorial in the parking lot. The Westport safety community is in mourning for one of their own; 44-year-old Sergeant Daniel R. Sullivan succumbed Saturday morning after a courageous battle with cancer.

The 18-year veteran of the Westport Police Department leaves a wife and two daughters.

 

Daniel R. Sullivan, 44, of Westport passed away Saturday, December 18, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family after a year-long battle with cancer.  He was husband of Dawn D. (Bouchard) Sullivan.

 

danny_sullivan.jpgBorn in Fall River, son of Daniel and Margaret (Duclos) Sullivan of Dartmouth, he had lived in Westport for the past 24 years.  He was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School.  Mr. Sullivan was appointed in 1992 as a Reserve Police Officer, promoted to Regular Police Officer in 1998, working in the Detective Division for many years before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2006. He was an avid Red Sox fan, enjoyed traveling but most of all loved spending time with his family. 

 

Including his parents and his wife, survivors include 2 daughters: Ashley P. Sullivan of Westport and Shaina N. Sullivan of Westport; 2 grandsons: Devin Sullivan and Brayden Sullivan; a niece and 2 nephews.

 

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Wednesday, December 22, 2010 from the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport at 8:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church, Westport at 10:00 a.m. Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.

 

Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road.

This active duty death is being supported by the Massachusetts Local Assistance State Team (LAST). The LAST team is part of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) www.firehero.org  This is the first active duty police death the team has supported and is significant because the NFFF is seeking to start a LAST team for police officers. All  members volunteer their time and provide expertise and resources to departments that have experienced a line of duty or active duty death of a member.

 

Deputy Chief Allen Manley is on the LAST team and was asked by the Westport Police Department to assist with planning.
