Forever Paws president issues immediate plea for support of endangered compassionate animal care and protection legislation.

“I am writing this plea to ask anyone who is compassionate about animals to lend their voices for those animals that are not able to speak for themselves.  Currently there is a proposed bill entitled, Act Prohibiting Devocalization, House Bill 344 which is a humane bill that would end the cruel practice of cutting companion animals vocal cords to stifle or remove the voice.  The bill is currently is stalled in committee chaired by Rep. Vincent Pedone D - Worcester for more than three months. Please contact him at (617) 722-2410 and ask him to release the bill. Time is running out! We have approximately two weeks or the bill will be dead,” said Gail Furtado, Forever Paws president.

“There are fifty-nine State Reps and Senators who have signed on to sponsor House Bill 344. Yet, they have not been afforded the opportunity to vote on the bill to become law in Massachusetts, Therefore, I am asking everyone to also contact Speaker DeLeo at 617-722-2500 and request that he move House Bill 344, to the floor as written, so it can be enforced!”

“Lastly, you could also call your local State Reps to urge them to support the bill too. If you want to see and hear what devocalizing does to a pet, go on our website at www.foreverpaws.com and click on the link to Youtube.come/watch.”

“Forever Paws Animal Shelters Board of Directors has joined Angell Animal Medical Center, veterinaries statewide and other humane organizations to support Bill 344. We need your help to ensure that no animals will be devocalized unless it was a medical necessity. Please support our endeavor by calling now, because time is running out!”

Below: Jennifer Gelinas (right) is welcomed to the Westport Art Group by Denise Zompa of WAG.

rsz_0.jpgThe Westport Art Group is conducting a feasibility study to determine whether the public would support and make use of a separate art studio for children. An anonymous WAG member has made a donation in gratitude to the WAG board and membership for its renewed emphasis in support of children and the arts. This donation could be used as seed money to build a separate studio dedicated to children’s work. The Westport Art Group’s one studio space has become very busy with many new programs in the last five years, such as, adult art classes, craft classes, exhibits by local artists, open studio weekend, demonstrations by well know artists, young artists summer camp and the annual holiday fair.

WAG’s latest class for children begins on Saturdays in March with art instructor, Jennifer Gelinas. Ms Gelinas is an artist, graphic designer and art teacher at Saint Stanislaus School in Fall River, MA. The enrollment for this class is full but we hope to have more classes in the future if there is enough interest.

WAG welcomes public comments and thoughts on the need for children’s art classes in the south coast area. Please voice your opinion by emailing dzompa@gmail.com or call Denise Zompa at
(401) 835-2996.
