Looking
for a fun and creative outlet during the cold winter month of March for your
young artists? Sign them up for an opportunity to draw, paint, collage and
exercise those creative minds and hands! Classes
will be held on Saturday mornings March 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 9:00 a.m. –
12:00 p.m. at the WAG building, 1740 Main Road in Westport. The
cost is $80.00 per child and all materials for the workshop will be provided.
The workshop is open to children ages 10–13, with space available for 10
students. Please register by February 15 to ensure a space. Local
artist, designer and teacher, Jennifer Gelinas will provide an opportunity
for participants to have a chance to work on their drawing and painting
skills while creating winter themed fine art projects. Students will learn to
apply their observations of nature in winter, while sketching and working on
different drawing techniques. They will also be taught to consider
composition and color theory as the focus shifts to a variety of watercolor
and acrylic painting techniques. Finally, students will have a chance to
learn from each other and build their art vocabulary as they share ideas and
participate in group critiques to encourage an appreciation for each other’s
unique and special talents. To
register, visit www.westportartgroup.com/classes.html , download the pdf of the registration form

Friday, January 29, 2010 Full moon rising.
The harsh, gale
force wind whipped up the ocean west of Gooseberry Island into a frenzy,
spraying seawater over the causeway, decorating the road surface and
breakwater with a heavy vale of pallid ice. It wasn’t a good
evening to take a moonlight walk; the bitter wind would tear the flesh off
your face. Nevertheless, it
was a spectacular full moon. January's
full moon is also called the wolf moon, according to Native American
tradition associating this month's full moon with wolves howling in the cold
midwinter. It
was easy to see the obvious difference in the moon's apparent size as it rose
above the eastern horizon, somewhat misshapen by its reflected light entering
the earth’s atmosphere and the hazy horizon. "This
month has the largest full moon of 2010, because it coincides with the
special moment when the full moon happens to occur on the same day as it is
at perigee," according to Marc Jobin, an astronomer at the Montréal
Planetarium. “The
moon will be at its closest perigee - the nearest it gets to our planet
during its egg-shaped orbit - for 2010 at 4:04 a.m. ET Saturday, reaching a
distance of 221,577 miles (356,593 kilometers) from Earth,” Jobin stated. From 4 – 6 p.m. Allens
Pond Sanctuary sponsored a Moonrise Walk where they witnessed the full moon
rising over Allens Pond, and looked and listened for owls and other nightlife
along the way.

The state-subsidized facility, including
the central office and community room as well as the six residential
buildings, was re-sided with a shingle similar to those being used at the new
southend fire station. New energy-efficient windows, and new curbs, sidewalks
and roadways completed the exterior work. “Overall the residents are very pleased,”
said Housing Authority Executive Director Steven Beauregard. “The new water
filtration system and windows will make for a more comfortable environment
for the seniors who reside in the 48 units we have here.” “Some of our residents have been here for
many years,” Beauregard said, “and they were somewhat skeptical the work
would get done.” The community room is also used by many
non-profit groups, such as the Westport Historical Society, for presentations
that include the seniors living in the complex.
