Scott Anderson of New Bedford, plagued by a series of second place finishes in this perennial event, jumped out front and increased that lead to an impressive 2 minutes 42 seconds win (27:10) over second place finisher David Constantine from Woonsocket (29:52).

49 year-old Brian Gollub of Dartmouth finished third male at 32:02.

Westport’s Mary Cass took top female honors and third overall (31:31) on a course that passed through the National Seashore along a shoreline accented by heavy mist and fog so typical of a cool spring morning in this picturesque coastal community.

Results were off from last year’s record-setting times by as much as a minute or more. Although not a record-setting effort, Anderson was happy with his win and said it was difficult to mentally challenge himself without another runner pushing you for the lead. “I was never really challenged,” said the 45-year-old Anderson.

The runners, waterlogged with moisture from the heavy mist and occasional drizzle, were hampered by the 15 knot winds and less-than-favorable conditions. But winner Scott Anderson was happy with the weather and thought conditions were perfect, a feeling shared with few finishers.

“Scottish” Scott Anderson threw off the “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” mantle with his resounding victory in this 6th running of this Westport Fishermen’s Association-sponsored event. Anderson finished second in 2009 behind Eric Narcisi of Charlestown, who set the course record of 25:19. Anderson was again a runner-up in 2007, finishing second to the then record-setting pace of 25:54 set by Patricio Munoz.  Munoz drafted Anderson the entire race, passing him at the end for the win.

Christine Anderson ran a respectable 32:05, and was the women’s second place finisher. Anderson was the top female finisher in 2009 with a time of 30:27. Tara Joncas of Westport with a time of 36:26 took third female and finished 15th overall.

Heather Capello holds the female record of 27:59 set in 2006.

In an interesting twist, Christine and Scott Anderson reversed their finishes from 2009 when Scott finished second male to Christine’s top female.

Tina Varzeas of Mattapoisett, a substitute teach in the Wareham High School, said it was very windy, and was glad the race was over. “When you made the turn into the wind it hit you like a lead balloon.” Varzeas, fifth place female, said.

14-year-old Aaron Demers of Fairhaven was the youngest runner, finishing 119 at 55:00.
