Rodrigues and Schmid win big in Westport!

rsz_5.jpgClear but chilly skies found Westport voters heading to the polls bundled up in coats, mufflers and an ironclad determination to make a difference in this year’s midterm elections.

Westporters came out in numbers not seen before in a midterm election as 6627 or 56.58% of the registered voters cast their ballots.

Westport’s Mike Rodrigues and Paul Schmid overwhelmed their lesser know and poorly funded opponents to become the first favorite-son legislators to concurrently represent Westport at the state house.

Left: Westport’s Lisa Arnold campaigning for her candidates of choice at the Town Hall Annex. Chilly but clear skies brought out record numbers of Westport voters.

State senator-elect Rodrigues took Westport over Lakeville’s Derek Maksy by a vote of 4644 to 1745, a 72.68% margin  that saw most unenrolleds voting for the popular, multi-term state representative.

Newly elected State Representative Schmid fared just as well taking Westport over Fall River’s F. George Jacome with a 4650 to 1498 vote tally, a 75.59% margin.

70-year-old U.S. Congressman Barney Frank, avoiding the nationalization of his race that did in so many incumbent democrats across the country, was resoundingly reelected to another term.

Independent voters had a big say in Westport, and in Bristol County. There were more new unenrolled voter registrations this year than ever before said Westport’s Dottie Silvia, assistant registrar of voters. “Total registered voters are at an all-time high – 11,713,” Silvia said. “5610 of those are unenrolled.”

Except for Fall River, unenrolleds are now the majority of registered voters in every town in Bristol County, bringing unpredictability to any local and district election. Fall River’s more than 17,750 registered democrats, however, helped propel the victories of Westport’s Paul Schmid and Michael Rodrigues.

Top vote-getter was Samuel Sutter with 4954; next was Paul Schmid with 4650; then Michael Rodrigues with 4644.

Precinct B, Town Hall Annex, had the best turnout with 61.10% voting; Precinct C, Macomber School, the least with 49.24%.

Left: U.S. Representative Barney Frank rallying with union supporters at New Bedford’s Buttonwood Park polls Tuesday afternoon. “I can’t wait for the next five hours to be over,” he said.  Right: An exuberant Paul Schmid celebrates with supports at the Estoril Café in Fall River.

Left: State senator-elect Michael Rodrigues received congratulatory text messages while thanking supporters at his victory party held at The Lady of the Light Band Club in Fall River.  Right: Good friends Steve and Twiggy Medeiros of Westport share a ‘salute’ with their favorite legislator, Michael Rodrigues. Rodrigues has been a big supporter of Westport causes and charitable events, in particular the Annual Rock, Rhythm and Blues Festival.
