rsz_9.jpgConcerts at the Point (CAP) kicked off its 2010/2011 season with another polished performance by the Muir String Quartet. No stranger to CAP, the long-running quartet made their sixth sell-out appearance at the historic Westport Point venue. In its 14th season, CAP can still pack the Westport Point United Methodist Church.

The Muir String Quartet is made up of Peter Zazofsky and Lucia Lin, violins; Steven Ansell, viola; and Michael Reynolds, cello. They presented a program of Haydn - Quartet in G minor, Op. 74, No. 3 “Horseman;” Janacek - Quartet No. 1 in E minor; and Dvorak - Quartet in C Major, Op. 61.

With 2010-2011 being its 32nd season, the Muir String Quartet has long been acknowledged as one of the world's most powerful and insightful ensembles, distinguishing itself among audiences and critics with its "exhilarating involvement" (Boston Globe),"impeccable voicing and intonation" (San Francisco Examiner) and "unbridled musicality" (American Record Guide). The Muir Quartet has been In Residence at Boston University's College of Fine Arts since 1983, and gives annual summer workshops at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.

Their recordings have garnered a Grammy nomination (the Mozart and Brahms Clarinet Quintets with Mitchell Lurie: EcoClassics), a Grammy (Beethoven String Quartets Op. 132 and 133), two Grand Prix du Disques (Franck Quintet with Jean-Phillipe Collard and Chausson’s Concert with Dumay and Collard: EMI), and the Gramophone Award (Franck Quintet: EMI). The Muir’s recording of the Kreisler, Berg Op. 3 and Schulhoff 5 Pieces will be released on the EcoClassics label this season. Highlights of the 2009-2010 season included performances of the complete Beethoven Quartets in Boston, Montana, and Utah.

Their recordings on EcoClassics have long provided benefit to conservation organizations and support the mission of Classics for Kids Foundation.

“The sound, the depth and interpretive polish to rival the best in the world”  – The New York Times

Not much more can be added to the accumulated media reviews as the impresarios at CAP and the Muir String Quartet once again deliver a  flawless performance with the flair and elegance associated with accomplished and confident musicians.

Some things do get better with time.
