Bill Russell, winemaker extraordinaire, checks Westport Rivers Vineyard's rsz_36.jpgsignature Pinot Noir red in the cask for flavor ("fruit-forward, flavors are reminiscent of sweet red berries"). The release later this summer of this very fickle varietal to produce is the vineyard's first in its 25 year existence.

Rain-rich springs with hot, dry summers are the favorable conditions for producing a red Pinot Noir according to Rob Russell of Westport Rivers Vineyard and Winery.

Pinot Noir may be the toughest grape to grow, but the effort is often well worth the constant care and investment. It is a frail grape that demands optimum growing conditions, opting for warm days consistently supported by cool evenings. As for style, Pinot Noir is typically a lighter-bodied, fruit-forward red wine.

"The grapes are tightly clustered, and nighttime moisture within the cluster can promote mold; too much rain during the growing season will swell the grapes and cause the outer skin to split - both conditions encourage mold.," according to Russell.

Unfortunately, the ideal growing conditions for the Pinot Noir red also are favorable to hurricanes, and the Winery's first opportunity 10 years ago was spoiled by hurricane Bob, one the costliest hurricanes in New England history.

Last year the vineyard had it second opportunity to harvest the delicate grape, and hurricane Earl came roaring up the East Coast and threatened to take away the vineyard's second attempt at the elusive red. At the last moment, Earl swung south by barely a mile and the day was saved.

Pinot Noir red anyone?

The entire school of 40 fish went on display Friday, July 29 just prior to the Vineyard's Sunset Music Series event featuring Gary Duquette, One Bad Ant.

The fish will return to their creators for the open studio tour event August 13th and 14th.

The 2011 Surprising Stripers will be available for purchase on EBAY from August 7 - 16. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lloyd Center for Environmental Education.

t31.jpgSelect Board Vice-Chairman Craig Dutra visited with the ROMEOS at their August 4th luncheon, and had a frank conversation with the seasoned group of political prognosticators on the foremost challenges now before the board.

And there are many.

"The one I think is the biggest issue (we face as selectmen)," Mr. Dutra said " . . . is hiring a new town administrator. Today, we have gone through the first round of applicants for interim (town administrator) . .  and from that we hope to have a shorter list of candidates that we interview in public in two weeks and be in a position to offer a job (to one of them)."

"I can say that every one of them has experience as a town administrator, had experience working in the Commonwealth."

"I am hopeful we will have by September an interim in place that will be working under the old (current) job description for the Town Administrator."

"We did designate the purchasing authority that the town administrator has to George Foster, so that he and the town accountant (Theresa Provencal) will have responsibility . . . particularly for our new procurement process to sign off on all purchase orders over $500," Mr. Dutra said.

"Immediately following this we will begin the search for a fulltime town administrator," he said.

"The next step for us is to take a look at the job description that exists, take a look at the requirements that we have, take a look at the bylaw that was passed at the town meeting this past May, and put together not only a job description but a wish list," Mr. Dutra said.

t34.jpgPCBs troubles at the Middle School, reorganizing town government, and the challenges of the town's Highway Surveyor.

"The Middle School as of today is uninhabitable," Mr. Dutra said putting forth his second major issue.

"The third issue before us is to discuss the structure of town government. Some us think that we could be running a slightly more professional business if we made some changes to the way the town in constructed," Mr. Dutra said.

"And that gets to the problem and the challenge of a Highway Surveyor."

These are the three issues people are talking about, are concerned about, and they are the biggest challenges we face, according to Selectman Craig Dutra..

"I think I've thrown enough grenades into the fire for topics (we can talk about)," Mr. Dutra said.

Senator Michael J. Rodrigues, First Bristol & Plymouth District, was recognized as the MAVA Legislator of the Year at a ceremony held during the MAVA annual summer meeting at the Devens Conference Center, Devens, MA on Wednesday, August 10, 2011.

School administrators, including career technical school Superintendents joined in recognizing Senator Rodrigues at the ceremony. The presentation of this award allows the vocational technical community to formally recognize all that Senator Rodrigues has done in support of the Commonwealth’s career and technical education delivery system as well as the students served by CTE program including his outstanding leadership as the Legislature’s champion for SkillsUSA Massachusetts, a career and technical student organization dedicated to work force development.

State Senator Michael Rodrigues emphasizes the importance of technical, leadership and service education in preparing our young people for the jobs of the future and the role that SkillsUSA plays. “SkillsUSA is an organization that prepares our students for future careers in a wide range of fields,” He said. “The organization provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development that is critical for our future workforce to succeed.”

Most importantly, the presentation of this award hopes to convey the deep appreciation of the career and technical education community for the Senator’s continued support and confidence in the Commonwealth’s vocational technical delivery system.

As Chairman of the Committee on Children, Families and persons with Disabilities, and Vice Chair of the Senate Committee for Labor and Workforce Development, Senator Rodrigues has been at the forefront of emphasizing the importance of technical, leadership and service education in preparing our young people for the jobs of the future.

Recognizing and honoring legislators who set a standard for service and commitment to education, encourages a sustained commitment to workforce education for the citizens of the Commonwealth, and inspires others to make life-long learning a central part of their lives.
