Westport threatened by flood
waters. EverythingWestport.com Friday, February 25, 2011 Westport Highway Surveyor employee, John Kennedy,
attempted to clear a blocked culvert with the department's backhoe at Lyons
Brook on upper Drift Road early Friday afternoon as heavy rains and winds
pummeled this coastal community. The
LSS Weather Station at Gooseberry Neck reported an average rainfall of 1.30
inches/hour at 1:23 p.m. which caused roadside flooding in low-lying
areas. The swollen East
Branch of the Westport River overflowed its banks at the Head of Westport. Rain water and
the melting snowpack rushed over frozen ground into streams, and several area
dams experienced levels not seen since last March. So far there has been
little damage, but uneasy residents still remember the ravages of last
spring's brutal flooding. A flood watch remained
in effect throughout the evening. Westport steams and brooks
were inundated with water runoff, but major flooding was avoided as the rain
let up in the evening, eventually replaced by a snow squall when temperatures
dropped with the approaching cold front. Winter may be leaving,
but it's not going without a fight. Above: the East Branch overflows its
banks at the Head of Westport, a not uncommon occurrence. Below:
the old fire hole off Drift Road is filled to capacity as Kirby Brook empties
its flood waters into the East Branch of the Westport River. EverythingWestport.com Tuesday, February 15, 2011 Hope springs eternal. Here are our top five
reasons why we predict an early Westport spring: Reason number 5: Punxsutawney Phil, the
Pennsylvania prognosticator, said so. Reason
number 4:
After wicked, Westport weather in January and February, nature appears
to be running out of snow and ice, long after Jack Sisson's snow removal
budget has run out of money. Reason
number 3:
Playing a round of Cape Cod golf (Brewster Captain's Golf Course) on
February 17 in shorts and short sleeves. Reason
number 2: Sleepy honey bees flying around your car's
open window. And
finally, reason number 1: Groggy
possums spotted nightly, scuttling across Westport roads to avoid being the
daily special at the Road Kill Cafe. On the practical side, the 2011 Farmers' Almanac believes that
overall, it will turn out to be a “kinder and gentler” winter. TownWear™ donates to Westport

The
event, which was previously called the State Representative Ski Challenge,
was renamed five years ago in memory of the late Jim Haskins, an enthusiastic
supporter of Special Olympics and a key organizer of the Ski Challenge. Also
instrumental in the success of the event is Senator Michael
J. Rodrigues, honorary chair person. Newly appointed Senator Rodrigues
has worked closely with Special Olympics in conjunction with the Ski and
Board Challenge for several years. “I am delighted to once again be working
with Special Olympics to raise money for these very special athletes,” said
Rodrigues. “Jim would be proud to know that we have continued the effort in his
name.” About Special Olympics Special Olympics Massachusetts promotes
