Westport threatened by flood waters.

t1.jpgWestport Highway Surveyor employee, John Kennedy, attempted to clear a blocked culvert with the department's backhoe at Lyons Brook on upper Drift Road early Friday afternoon as heavy rains and winds pummeled this coastal community. The LSS Weather Station at Gooseberry Neck reported an average rainfall of 1.30 inches/hour at 1:23 p.m. which caused roadside flooding in low-lying areas.

The swollen East Branch of the Westport River overflowed its banks at the Head of Westport.

Rain water and the melting snowpack rushed over frozen ground into streams, and several area dams experienced levels not seen since last March. So far there has been little damage, but uneasy residents still remember the ravages of last spring's brutal flooding.

A flood watch remained in effect throughout the evening.

Westport steams and brooks were inundated with water runoff, but major flooding was avoided as the rain let up in the evening, eventually replaced by a snow squall when temperatures dropped with the approaching cold front.

Winter may be leaving, but it's not going without a fight.

Hope springs eternal.

Hope springs eternal. Here are our top five reasons why we predict an early Westport spring:

Reason number 5:  Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvania prognosticator, said so.

Reason number 4:  After wicked, Westport weather in January and February, nature appears to be running out of snow and ice, long after Jack Sisson's snow removal budget has run out of money.

Reason number 3:  Playing a round of Cape Cod golf (Brewster Captain's Golf Course) on February 17 in shorts and short sleeves.

Reason number 2:  Sleepy honey bees flying around your car's open window.

And finally, reason number 1: Groggy possums spotted nightly, scuttling across Westport roads to avoid being the daily special at the Road Kill Cafe.

t6.jpgOn the practical side, the 2011 Farmers' Almanac believes that overall, it will turn out to be a “kinder and gentler” winter.

March 6 Daytrip to Loon Mountain

Sign up now for this 17th annual charity ski trip from Fall River & New Bedford area to Loon Mountain in New Hampshire

t14.jpgTaunton, Mass. - Bright and early on Sunday, March 6, more than 300 ski and snowboard enthusiasts will pack six coach buses to head for Loon Mountain in New Hampshire for a fun-filled day on the slopes. All proceeds from the event will go to benefit Special Olympics athletes and events in Southeastern Massachusetts.

“This charity event keeps growing in popularity,” said Megan Hoffman, south section director for Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA). “In addition to great skiing and boarding, we have a raffle featuring thousands of dollars in top notch ski/board gear. That’s proven just as popular as the time on the slopes itself. We owe a big thank you to Bob’s Sea & Ski for hosting and donating to this event,” Hoffman said.

Click here for brochure, registration form, and more information.

Buses will depart on Sunday, March 6 at 5am from both White’s of Westport and Bob’s Sea and Ski in New Bedford and will arrive at Loon Mountain at 8am. After a full day on the slopes, awards and prizes will be presented, followed by dinner courtesy of Stafford Insurance. Buses will depart from Loon at 4pm and should arrive back at White’s and Bob’s at around 7pm.

Registration for the event costs $74.95 and includes transportation, lift ticket, dinner and a long-sleeve event T-shirt. To register, contact Bob Mercer of Bob’s Sea and Ski at 508-992-2662 or bobseaski@aol.com.

Participants can do additional fundraising using a pledge sheet available through the Special Olympics Web site at www.specialolympicsma.org/south. The top 3 fundraisers will win a surprise ski/board package courtesy of Bob’s Sea and Ski. Sponsorship opportunities are also available by contacting Special Olympics MA. Our returning gold medal sponsor is Landscape Products and Services. Interested parties should contact Megan Hoffman at: 508-821-3635 or at megan.hoffman@specialolympicsma.org.

The event, which was previously called the State Representative Ski Challenge, was renamed five years ago in memory of the late Jim Haskins, an enthusiastic supporter of Special Olympics and a key organizer of the Ski Challenge.

Also instrumental in the success of the event is Senator Michael J. Rodrigues, honorary chair person. Newly appointed Senator Rodrigues has worked closely with Special Olympics in conjunction with the Ski and Board Challenge for several years. “I am delighted to once again be working with Special Olympics to raise money for these very special athletes,” said Rodrigues. “Jim would be proud to know that we have continued the effort in his name.”
