Harbor Neighborhood Association spokesperson Tim Agnew (left) pleads his case
for closing the road while Selectman Tony Vieira listens. But Westport
residents should have access said select board chair Richard Spirlet. Beach Avenue has been closed, opened and closed again
over the last four years. After being reopened recently due to a threatened
lawsuit, the road will now be closed again, but only for 30 days while a committee
decides the most appropriate action to take. The town's public safety officer will report on the
road's condition. The avenue is the only access route to the popular Knubble, a destination point for hikers and fishermen. Neighbors complain of property intrusions and stuck
motor vehicles. +enlarge Advocates for keeping the road open claim taxpayer
rights and access to conservation land and beach owned by both the town and
other environmental groups. The road, originally built by the federal government in
the early 1930s, is used by the Coast Guard for maintaining the harbor
entrance navigational daymark.
The non-maintained road, a source of aggravation for
town maintenance workers, motorists, neighbors, and most everyone else but
the wildlife, was first closed in August 2007. Beach, beach everywhere and not a parking space to be
found. Ridiculous. Viveiros appointed to School Committee. Tony Viveiros was unanimously chosen by Selectmen and the
School Committee to replace disenchanted School Committee member Tim Harrenstein who abruptly
resigned in April, citing a busy
work-related travel schedule, a belief that he can better help the town in
other ways, and disenchantment with the School Committee in general. Antonio Viveiros
lost to Michele Duarte for a two-year term on the School Committee in this
year's annual April town elections. Gerrymandering in Westport? Town
Clerk Marlene Samson presented a new Precinct Boundaries Plan which after a brief
discussion was unanimously approved by Selectmen. "Most
residents will see little or no change," Samson told Selectman. Briefly,
the following roads would be moved from Precinct
A (American Legion Hall) to Precinct
C (Macomber School): Christine
Drive, Diane Way, Eddy Drive, Gabriala Lane, Irene
Drive, Susan Drive, and Tripp Drive. From Precinct B (Town Hall Annex) to Precinct C (Macomber
School): Beeden Place. And
from Precinct E (Westport High
School) to Precinct D (Briggs Road
Fire Station): Granite
Post Road, Indian Trail Road, Meadowbrook Lane, Old farm Road, Old Pasture
Lane, and Roque Drive. Selectmen
mulled over the possibility of combining precincts to save money and
resources, but no action was taken. Veterans' Agent Ron Costa to retire. The
Selectmen will begin the process of replacing Veterans' Agent Ron Costa who
has announced his retirement. Costa will stay on until a replacement is
found. In
other business, a transfer of a trailer permit for Richard and Leslie
Anderson for a six-month seasonal trailer permit on 38 East Beach Road was unanimously
granted by the Selectmen. And Kudos to Liz Collins for waiving her $3000
stipend as a new member of the Board of Registrars. "She is to be
commended for her sacrifice to the good of the town, select board chair
Richard Spirlet said. Wrong place at the right time. EverythingWestport.com Saturday,

Selectmen
voted unanimously to accept precinct boundary changes this past Tuesday, and
several streets and neighborhoods will be affected. +enlarge According
to Town Clerk Marlene Samson, precinct lines can be redrawn by the state to
reflect the latest census figures. But most voters
won’t notice any difference, Samson said Tuesday night at the Selectmen's
meeting. The U.S. Census is taken every 10 years. “It’s done to conform with the census every 10 years,”
Samson said. “If there are too many people in some of the precincts, then the
boundaries are moved. Once Selectmen vote for the changes, the precinct boundary
plan goes back to the state for certification," Samson said. “Everyone will be notified by postcard once the state
accepts the changes,” Samson said.
