The Westport Historical Society is thrilled to announce that the Handy House Preservation Project has received a major boost through a significant contribution from the Manton Foundation, an institution established by Sir Edwin and Lady Manton to support a broad range of cultural, educational and health programs.

The Historical Society recently assumed a new role as steward of the Handy House which is located at 202 Hix Bridge Road, and which is one of Westport’s most notable historic landmarks.

With Community Preservation Act funding and early widespread support from many individuals in the community, the Westport Historical Society is now positioned to take the next steps toward the preservation of the Handy House -- and toward its ultimate goal of making this important property an accessible resource where all members of the community can explore and experience this special place firsthand - literally stepping into the past and into all the human lessons and history that lie there.

As part of this planning process, the community is invited for a first glimpse of the Handy House on Saturday May 21 1PM to 4PM at 202 Hix Bridge Road. This open house event is the first of many opportunities for the community to visit the Handy House and to learn about plans for the preservation and future use of this historic property.

Although the Historical Society is not ready to offer in-depth tours, this is a great chance for visitors to begin to get to know the house and property. Visitors to the house will be able to see both the special architectural integrity that this property has retained over 300 years as well as the wear and tear of those three centuries.

During coming months the Historical Society will be making decisions with input from the community and specialists about the preservation of the building and about the vision for its new role in the future.

"Although much is known about the history of the Handy House, there are fundamental questions that are crucial to assessing future preservation needs. When exactly was the first section constructed? How was it configured? How did Handy House develop structurally over time? What construction methods were used?" - Jenny O'neil, WHS Director

Since January graduate students participating in the Historic Preservation Program under the guidance of Professor Philip Marshall at Roger Williams University have spent many hours documenting the interior of the Handy House, from which they will develop recommendations for future interpretation and treatment. Timber framers, architectural historians and preservation architects have begun work to tell the Handy House's story.

The stories of former Handy House owners and residents, from Elizabeth Cadman White and her twelve children in the 1700s to Eleanor Tripp in more recent years, have been discovered and studied. The lives of these former residents are closely entwined with the evolution of the house and surrounding property and reflect broad changes in the family and social historical contexts of Westport and the region.

Photographs and documents found in the house are being catalogued. Among the discoveries so far is a treasure trove of daguerreotypes of members of the Handy family and a fascinating collection of mid-18th century documents relating to the White family.
An archeological survey will be conducted in May by Thomas Urban to identify and protect potentially sensitive areas on the Handy House site. Using electromagnetic methods and magnetometry, the survey is expected to reveal a range of features including buried foundations, metal and metal-working areas, privies and animal pens, areas that have been burned or heated, iron objects, magnetic stones, filled ditches and pits.

The Society welcomes volunteers and suggestions.

Founded in 1964, Westport Historical Society is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. Its mission is to collect, preserve and document the material culture of Westport; and to educate and connect the residents of the area to their heritage through public programs, exhibits, publications and research.
