The Regos live their dream. EverythingWestport.com Sunday, September 25, 2011 "I used to
come her as a kid on my bike to buy a soda and some chips when the store was
called Cadine's," State Senator Michael
Rodrigues said at yesterday's ribbon cutting ceremony for Janet's Country Store and Deli.
"We would be shooting down at the Rod and Gun Club, and would have our
shotguns on the bikes. We would bring them into the store so they wouldn't
get stolen. Imagine doing that today!" Westport's
senator spoke on behalf of his friend and said he "was so happy that
this store has opened in my neighborhood." Town
and state officials, friends, relatives and neighbors crowded the parking lot
to help Lino and Janet Rego
celebrate the realization of a dream that started over a year ago. Lino Rego, the current Commander of Westport's American Legion James Morris Post No. 145, is no stranger to community service and has long
envisioned operating his own neighborhood variety store. His
careful planning really paid off. Lino Reno, overwhelmed
by the support and outpouring of congratulations was choked with emotion as
he told of his journey to this day, and thanked all those who helped him and
his wife to realize their dream Located

sometimes render reactive and innovative solutions to fund those non-profits
most vulnerable during bad times. But
not always. But
when the going gets tough the tough get going. Drawing
on the nascent inspiration of now-deceased Rosemary Lenrow,
the combined planning and ensuing effort of Westport's Council of Aging and
the Westport Education Foundation resulted in their first annual Walk for Westport. The
walk was held in memory of Rosemary Lenrow who died
during the organization of the event. Lenrow
brought the idea to both groups as way to showcase how working together would
build a better community, according to COA Director Mary Ellen Gomes. "Rosemary
approached the Westport Education Foundation with her idea of joining the
generations for the benefit of the Westport schools and the Westport Senior
Center," said Gomes. Lenrow had been President
of the Friends of the Westport Council of Aging. "It
was awesome," COA Director Mary Ellen Gomes said. "It was so much fun,
so exciting. We raised $10,000; $5000 for each group." The
sparkling fall day brought out over 150 walkers from children in strollers to
several octogenarians, and the Acoaxet venue
couldn't have been better. The
walk started at 9 a.m. from the parking lot at Howland Beach Club and CK
Beach Club, and proceeded up from the corner
of Howland Road and ended at Elephant Rock Beach Club. "The
entire Walk for Westport Committee is grateful to all those that contributed
to the success of this heartwarming day," said Chairperson Sarah
Gifford. "Community spirit was soaring through the ocean air and it was
a day that all members of the Westport community could be proud of." A
family fun event followed the walk including children’s games, face painting,
magician Skip Daniels entertaining young and seasoned citizens alike, and
music by piano-playing Al Deston. Souvenir t-shirts,
hot dogs, pizza and popcorn was on sale after the event. "Plans
are already underway for next year's walk for Westport in September of
2012," Gifford said.
