2014 Duck Derby Champion, Linny Cakes enjoyed her visit to Hawaii!

As February continued to dump massive amounts of snow on the SouthCoast, Linny Cakes, the winning duck from the 2014 Allens Pond Duck Derby fundraiser, enjoyed the warmth and hospitality of Hawaii.

This little rubber duck earned roundtrip airfare to Oahu for Linda and Richard Crossley by beating out the other 5777 racing ducks who were racing the incoming tide at Barney’s Joy this past August at the 11th Annual Allens Pond Duck Derby to win her adoptive parents from Fall River the grand prize of dinner for two, anywhere in the world with round-trip airfare and two nights’ lodging.

Linda first learned of the Duck Derby while traveling with girlfriends to Atlantic City and was impressed.  “I thought, for a $10 donation to the wildlife sanctuary – that’s quite a prize.  I was at the Bayside restaurant having dinner with Richard and saw a young woman selling ducks there and purchased two, one for us and one for my daughter.”

Then, like all the other duck adopters – she went on with her life and didn’t think much about it.

Until her duck won.

Linda wasn’t at the Duck Derby festival to hear her name being announced to the crowd of hopeful winners (there were 40+ other prizes to be won, including the beloved and underestimated Slacker Quacker, whose last place arrival wins its adoptive parent a free duck entry to the next Derby) – she was helping her daughter with a project at home and received a voice mail from Gina Purtell, Sanctuary Director.

Ducks are available for online adoption for the 12th Annual Allens Pond Duck Derby; this year to take place the weekend of August 15th & 16th.

Once she was notified of winning the grand prize, the hardest part of the process started: deciding where to go.  Imagine, two tickets to anywhere in the world.  They considered Rome, but decided on Hawaii, where the Crossleys would like to retire.  The couple extended their trip to ten days in paradise, while relatives at home sent photos of the storms to her phone; they returned those messages with photos of the beach, tropical drinks, their travel tours to breathtaking areas of the island, the USS Arizona Memorial and their dinner that Linny Cakes also provided with their win – an amazing luau.

Twin River Group Plans to Move Newport Grand to Tiverton.

Twin River Management Group has secured the rights to acquire 45 acres of land off of Route 181, along the Massachusetts state border.

The owners of Twin River Casino announced Tuesday that they plan to move Newport Grand to Tiverton according to a press release issued by the company. Click here for all the details and video.

The plan entails constructing a casino on a 45-acre site in Tiverton off Route 81 next to the Massachusetts border, which will help Twin River Management Group better compete against new casinos opening in that state.

Newport Grand would remain in operation during the construction phase but close once work was finished. http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=JN.blUDsGsrMpJuZyqMVOkRrw&w=300&h=300&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0&r=0

According to AP, the company, which entered into a contract to buy Newport Grand last month, said a casino would better compete closer to the Mass. border.

A new casino in Tiverton with table games and easy access to state highways would allow Rhode Island to compete with neighboring Massachusetts for gambling revenue, state casino operators said Tuesday.

Twin River Management Group has secured the rights to acquire 45 acres of land off of Route 181, along the Massachusetts state border, and the operators of the Twin River Casino in Lincoln plan to build a new casino there with about 1,000 slot machines and 30 to 40 table games, said John Taylor, the group's chairman and as reported by the Associated Press..

The existing gambling license at Newport Grand, which Twin River acquired last month, would be transferred to the new casino, but voters must approve the plan first, Taylor said. He said he hopes to see the question on the ballot in November 2016.

The new facility would be a "convenience casino that fits in with the local community," Taylor said, and would not compete with Twin River for clientele.

"It's not a net-sum game," he said.

Gambling revenue in Rhode Island is expected to take a hit approaching $100 million a year because of new casinos and gambling facilities in Massachusetts in coming years. A 1,250-machine slot parlor in Plainville, Massachusetts, is to open as early as June, and analysts predict Rhode Island's lottery revenues will take a hit almost immediately.

Lottery revenues are the third largest source of revenues in Rhode Island. Last fiscal year, revenues were $376.3 million, and $293.8 million of that came from Twin River, according to the state Department of Revenue's Office of Revenue Analysis.

Relocating the casino to Tiverton makes sense, Taylor said, because of Newport Grand's location and the city's reticence to expand gambling there. Newport residents have twice voted against adding tables games.

Twin River Management Group acquired Newport Grand last month, but the merger is subject to approval from the state lottery and the state Department of Business Regulation. Taylor said the deal should close by June 30.

Gov. Gina Raimondo said in a statement that the proposal could be "beneficial for the state," while House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello expressed his unequivocal approval.

"I have always been a supporter of Twin River and I applaud them for their creativity and their willingness to invest in our state," Mattiello said in a statement.

Tiverton Town Council president Denise deMedeiros was not reached for comment, and Tiverton officials have not released any information on the planned move.

Mistaken identity? Not!

The driver told police he wasn’t behind the wheel of the blue Chevrolet Cavalier that allegedly ran a stoplight while westbound on Charlotte White Road and collided with a car on Route 88.

A driver of a Chevrolet Cavalier that allegedly ran a stoplight while westbound on Charlotte White Road and collided with a car on Route 88, denied he was driving the car despite eyewitness testimony, a photo taken by the driver of the other car, and a surveillance video which showed the man in the driver’s seat, according to an article in Westport Shorelines.

Despite the multiple denials, the driver is now in the hot seat.

Joao Barbosa, 68, of 2 Purdue Lane, Dartmouth told police he wasn’t behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Cavalier that allegedly ran a stoplight while westbound on Charlotte White Road and collided with a car on Route 88.

But Westport Police contend that a photo taken from the other car and other evidence said otherwise, according to Westport Shorelines.

Barbosa was charged with drunk driving, his fourth offense. Added to that were counts of driving to endanger, leaving the scene of a crash causing property damage, refusing to produce identification, and driving with a revoked license that was a result of a drunk driving conviction.

“A driver of a blue Chevrolet Cavalier that allegedly ran a stoplight while westbound on Charlotte White Road and collided with a car on Route 88, denied he was driving the car despite eyewitness testimony, a photo taken by the driver of the other car, and a surveillance video which showed the man in the driver’s seat.” - Westport Police

Detective Jeff Majewski said police received an emergency call at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th from a hit and run crash victim.
The caller told police she had been headed driving north on Route 88 at Charlotte White Road when a Chevy Cavalier ran a red light and the two cars collided. She said that when the other driver took off she followed him onto a side street and watched as he parked in a driveway at 3 Bayberry Drive in Westport. One of the three people inside the woman’s car took a photo of the man behind the wheel.

She also told police that Mr. Barbosa told her to “get off his property.”

Det. Majewski said that when police arrived, Mr. Barbosa refused to identify himself and denied driving the Cavalier.

Submitted photo.

“He had a strong odor of liquor on his breath and he was subsequently arrested. He was identified through a Registry of Motor Vehicles query of other residents at the same address as the vehicle’s owner. Mr. Barbosa kept repeating, ‘My wife was driving not me.’ No one else was present other than Mr. Barbosa,” Det. Majewski said.

The property owner had a home surveillance system which showed the Cavalier pull into the driveway, stop and “Mr. Barbosa was seen exiting the car.” Mr. Barbosa later failed a chemical breath test.

The Bristol County DA’s Office presented testimony at a dangerousness hearing Monday where Mr. Barbosa was held as a danger to the community by a District Court judge. Several officers participated in the investigation.

Like Dean Martin said,” If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.”
