March 26th Westport
Candidates Night will discuss six ballot questions. EverythingWestport.com Monday,
March 16, 2015 Voters will face
six ballot questions in this year’s April town elections; three of them non-binding
and two of them sure to raise the hackles of conservative voters - the
fiscally-strapped town will face resistance from voters who in the past have
shown little appetite in approving Proposition 2 ½ overrides. Non-binding questions 4 through 6 are on
the ballot to take the taxpayers’ pulse on how they feel about several
controversial proposals the town is considering - one question involves
hiring an outside firm to reassess property values for accurate taxation
purposes; the other two questions will help Selectmen determine how best to
determine the status of Beach Avenue as the town tries to grapple an
unpopular issue with the road’s abutters. Binding Question 1 (2) acquire and equip the following pieces of capital equipment: (a)
Information Technology Department – Computer Systems, Phone System, and
Copiers: (b) Highway – Freightliner Truck w/Plow and Sander, and Chipper; (c)
School – Van and Pickup Truck; (d) Fire – Engine 4?” (1) paving the Macomber School parking lot, (2) a new well for Westport High School, (3) a new pickup truck for the Highway Department and (4) cars/SUVs for the Fire Department for the fiscal year beginning July

free head and neck cancer screenings on Tuesday, April 14th. Free head and neck cancer

Centers for Cancer Care oncologists and Southcoast
Ear Nose & Throat Surgeons have teamed up to offer free head and neck
cancer screenings on the Southcoast Wellness Van on
Tuesday, April 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 114 McArthur Boulevard in
New Bedford. “Times have changed. We used to worry about oral cavity cancers mainly
in people who use tobacco products, especially chew tobacco. We have known
for a long time that combining alcohol with tobacco increases the risk of an
oral cavity cancer a hundred times compared to those who don't do
either," said Wendy Stern, MD, Chief of Otolaryngology for Southcoast Health. "Now we have a new risk factor to
worry about, human papilloma virus, a sexually-transmitted disease that
increases the risk for oral cavity cancer. In fact, two out of three newly
diagnosed oral cavity cancers are associated with this virus." “Head and
neck cancers can be very aggressive; however, they are very treatable when
caught at an early stage.” Dr.
Patrick Gagnon, a radiation oncologist at Southcoast
Health A head and neck cancer screening is quick and painless. Doctors will
inspect the lips, gums, cheeks and mouth using a light. They will also feel
for lumps in the neck. Reservations are required for the screening, and can
be made by calling 877.822.2732. “Head and neck cancers can be very aggressive however they are very
treatable when caught at an early stage,” said Dr. Patrick Gagnon, a
radiation oncologist at Southcoast
Health. “Our goal is to raise awareness of this important cancer while
providing appropriate education about its risk factors to our local
communities.” Some of the symptoms that are common in head and neck cancer include a
lump or sore that does not heal, a sore throat that
does not go away, difficulty swallowing and a change or hoarseness in the
voice. Head and neck cancers are more common in men and in people over the
age of 40. It is estimated that about 50,000 men and women in the United
States are diagnosed with head and neck cancers annually. Caucasians
currently have the highest incidence rates of head and neck cancer, although
death is still highest among African Americans. The screening is a part of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week®,
April 12-18, which is led by the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance and
supported by the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. Slow

the Shattuck. Exhibition
runs from Wednesday, March 25th through Sunday, April 26th. Artist's
Reception on Saturday, March 28th, and
Artist's Talk on Saturday, April 18th. EverythingWestport.com Saturday, March
21, 2015 Dedee Shattuck Gallery is excited
to announce their 2015 season opening exhibition. Chris Gustin is one of the stand-out local artists that
inspired Dedee to open her gallery in Westport four
years ago. A solo show of his influential work has been highly
anticipated. Gustin is a renowned artist who has
developed a specific aesthetic language over nearly forty years of
professional practice. He received his BFA from the Kansas City Arts
Institute and his MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred
University in 1977. He is a mentor for aspiring ceramic artists and an
organizer of our local ceramics culture. He is a cofounder of the Watershed
Center for Ceramic Arts in Maine. He hosts regular community firings in his
massive Anagama kiln in his studio, and shows his
own work and the work of other artists in the gallery space attached to his workshop. Known for his graceful undulating
forms, ambitious scale, and beautiful organic layered glaze techniques, Gustin has become a household name in the ceramics world. Slow Breath, celebrates Chris Gustin's distinguished career and artistic excellence. We
exhibit a collection of vessels, platters, and objects that show a range of Gustin's expertise and conceptual experiments. The work
is abstract, but references the human form, and displays his extensive
research on the materials and aesthetics of ceramics. They are pleased
and honored to host this exhibit as our opening show of 2015, and in coordination
with the 2015 NCECA conference. Artist's Reception: Saturday, March 28th from
