Plein Air, presented by the Westport Art Group Westport Art Group is
pleased to present two opportunities for learning about Plein
Air painting. Plein air, in dictionary definition, means "in the open air", and this method of painting has
been popular since the invention of the collapsible tin paint tube in the
mid-1800's. Artists such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste
Renoir, and Camille Pissarro, the leaders of Impressionism, did quite a lot
of painting en plein air,
as they made efforts to capture the true effects of light on the color of the
landscape at any given moment. Starting this May, the
Westport Art Group is offering two opportunities to learn more about painting
en plein air,
an evening demo in Padanaram, and a 6 week plein air
class at various locations. Evening Plein Air Painting Demonstration with Robert Abele - Tuesday, May 19th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Enjoy a spring evening
by the sea and learn how to paint plein air.
Instructor Robert Abele of the Westport Art Group will demonstrate plein air painting techniques, including choosing subject
matter, starting the painting, selecting colors, value, line and more. This
demonstration will explore the materials, supplies and equipment needed to
make the most of your outdoor painting experience. Bring a lawn chair and
notepad, sit back, relax and explore the rewards of painting in the open air.
Pre-registration is not required. For
more information, visit the Westport Art Group website, www.WestportArtGroup.com. Suggested Donation $5 Location: Apponagansett Park, 77 Gulf Road, South Dartmouth,
MA The park is near the Padanaram
Bridge and offers scenic harbor views, a sandy beach area and picnic area. Painting the South Coast
Landscape - Oil, watercolor and
acrylic - Tuesday Evenings: 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. May 26th, June 2nd,
9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th. This will be an
enjoyable, six-week series of classes involving painting on-site in the South
Coast landscape. Participants will explore the advantages of plein air painting, as well as the various approaches to
working on-site and how to efficiently compose and complete plein air paintings. The classes are open
to all levels. The Evening Plein Air Demonstration
on May 19th is recommended to those who want to begin the plein
experience or for artists who want to review or learn the latest in
techniques and materials. Instructor Robert
Abele. Fee for Six-Week Session: $75 for WAG members, $90 for non-WAG
members. Register and get the

River Watershed Alliance announces winners of River Day Poster contest. EverythingWestport.com Sunday, May 3,
2015 The Westport
Watershed Alliance (WRWA) has chosen the winners for this year’s River Day
Poster contest. Students from grades
2-5 at the Westport Elementary School submitted designs, with the theme of river
habitats, featuring the wildlife and scenic beauty of the Westport River and
its watershed. Over 100 art works were
submitted, making the task of choosing the winner from many worthy entries a
challenge. The winning art work will
be the artistic basis for the poster for the annual River Day event, which
will take place this June 6th at the Head of Westport. This year’s
overall winner is third grader Ella Turenne, whose colorful crayon
depiction of fish, birds, trees and sunshine was the judges’ hands-down
favorite (see below). The other ribbon winners, listed for each
grade level, are as follows: Grade
2: 1st prize – Hailey Taylor; 2nd prize - Emma
Hathaway; 3rd prize – Lily Cuclos.
Grade
5: 1st prize – CJ Harrison; 2nd
prize – Lacey Chaunt;
3rd prize – Dustin Gagne. This year’s
popular River Day will take place on Saturday, June 6th, at the Town Landing
at the historic Head of Westport, at the intersection of Drift Road and Old
County Road. This event is free and open
to the public and runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Featured
activities will include: live music,
on- going children’s games, fish tee-shirt printing, stilt building, wee
boat racing, face painting, May Pole dancing at 12:30 p.m., walking tour
of historic Head of Westport, a live raptor show, environmental exhibits, and
tour of WRWA’s future headquarters. Featured
musicians include Rhode Island’s well-known folk duo Atwater Donnelly, the Westport
High School Band, and the Spindle Rock River Rats. Food and beverages will be available for
purchase. June is National
Rivers Month, and in observation, WRWA is holding a special Membership Drive
during the month of June. This is a
great time to renew membership, or join, with half-priced memberships offered
on River Day. This year marks the 30th
anniversary of the organization’s first River Day. Last year, the
Watershed Alliance purchased the old “Head Garage” site on the River, and is
finalizing plans for its renovation to become the new WRWA headquarters. For more information visit the WRWA web
