Legislature enhances veteran protections, expands benefits for Purple Heart recipients. EverythingWestport.com Thursday, November 5, 2015 Representative Paul A. Schmid (D-Westport) joined his colleagues in the
House of Representatives to pass multiple bills to protect the identities and
legacies of active-duty military personnel and veterans. These bills build
upon existing legislation to expand opportunities and services for military
personnel, veterans and their families. The Stolen Valor Act criminalizes falsely representing oneself as
military personnel, a veteran or a recipient of specific military honors in
order to receive money, property or a tangible benefit. This crime would be
punishable by a fine of $1,000 and imprisonment of not more than one
year. “I am so
proud of the collective work of my colleagues to ensure the Legislature
continues to protect and preserve the integrity of those who served our Commonwealth and country.
Massachusetts has always been at the forefront of
veteran benefit programs, and given the close proximity to the celebration of
Veteran’s Day next week, it was a no-brainer to pass these bills and further their protection.” State
Representative Paul Schmid. Under legislation passed today, Purple Heart recipients would have free
access to state parks, forests and reservations. The House also passed bills
related to stealing, damaging or desecrating veterans’ graves and
inappropriately removing a commemorative American flag representing service
the military, police or fire departments. This

College Law School legal historian Mary Bilder will
discuss her new book "Madison's Hand." EverythingWestport.com Sunday, November 8,
2015 Boston College
Law School legal historian Mary Bilder (pictured
right) will discuss her new, much acclaimed, book "Madison's Hand" on Friday, November 20th from 5:00
to 6:00 p.m. at Dedee Shattuck Gallery, 865
Main Road, Westport. The event is free
and open to the public. James Madison’s Notes on the 1787 Constitutional
Convention have acquired nearly unquestioned authority as the description of
the U.S. Constitution’s creation. No document provides a more complete record
of the deliberations in Philadelphia or depicts the Convention’s charismatic
figures, crushing disappointments, and miraculous triumphs with such
narrative force. But how reliable is this account? In an unprecedented investigation that draws on digital technologies
and traditional textual analysis to trace Madison’s composition, Mary Sarah Bilder reveals that Madison revised the Notes to a far
greater extent than previously recognized. The Notes began as a diary of the Convention’s proceedings. Madison
abandoned the project at a critical juncture, however, and left the Notes
incomplete. He did not return to finish them until several years later,
largely for Thomas Jefferson. By then, Madison’s views were influenced by the
new government’s challenges and Jefferson’s political ideas. Madison’s
evolving vision of republican government, his Virginia allegiances, his
openness to constitutional protection for slavery, his fascination with the
finer points of political jockeying, and his depictions of Alexander Hamilton
and Charles Pinckney shifted during the writing and rewriting of his account.
When the Notes were finally published in 1840, the layers of revision
were invisible. Madison’s version of events quickly assumed an aura of objectivity, and
the Notes molded the narrative of the Constitution. “Madison’s Hand” offers readers a biography of a document that, over two
centuries, developed a life and character all its own. Professor Bilder will be available to sign copies of the book prior
to her talk. “Madison's Hand” is available for purchase on-line and can be
pre-ordered for purchase from Partner's Village Store in the book section by
contacting Elizabeth Lane at 508.636.2572 or
by emailing liz@partnersvillagestore.com. "Every
historian who has ever written about the Constitutional Convention has used
James Madison's 'Notes' as a fundamental primary source. Madison's Hand is an
exceptionally important piece of work that will have a profound effect on all
future work on the Constitutional Convention."
- Richard Beeman,
author Our Lives, Our Fortunes, and Our Sacred Honor. "Bilder has written the definitive study of one of the
most influential texts in American Constitutional history. She
demonstrates that Madison's notes on the Philadelphia Convention were never
intended to preserve an impartial transcript of debates for posterity [--]
rather to serve the various purposes of their author, which changed
dramatically over the decades." - Eric
Nelson, author The Royalist Revolution. "Anyone who
wants to understand the Constitution must take this book into account."
- Michael McConnell,
co-author The Constitution of the United States. "Accessible
and brilliant." - Wall Street Journal © 2015 Community Events of Westport. All rights
