Man's best friends ... have you ever wanted to see your pet in portrait? Westport Art Group is pleased to offer a 2-day animal drawing and painting workshop with artist-teacher Betsey MacDonald on Saturday, April 2 and Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Critter Creations workshop will emphasize new ways to approach an animal drawing or painting. Creative animal art will be shown and discussed. Then, Jed, a black lab, will model for a bit of contour and gesture drawing.

Setting a ground and creating a value study will be the focus of the first day of work. On the second Saturday, participants will discuss the use of color in animal portraiture through critiquing some of MacDonald’s work and will then create a watercolor from a favorite photograph.

The workshop is open to the public, and will be held at Westport Art Group's building at 1740 Main Road, Westport. The fee is $100 for members and $135 for non-members, which includes a full year of membership.

About Artist/Teacher Betsey MacDonald

In graduate school, an extraordinary teacher told Betsey MacDonald to paint what she loves. Since then her art has been inspired by her love of animals. One of her favorite animals to paint is horses and in 2014, Betsey was invited to be a member of the American Academy of Equine Art. She has been teaching high school art for many years and started an Advanced Placement Art Class at Cumberland High School. Her desire to encourage her students to take risks with their art keeps Betsey trying new materials and always searching for interesting contemporary artists to share with her kids.

Betsey’s methods are the result of 40 years of education, teaching and studio work. She is an energetic and positive teacher. This will be a fun, relaxed workshop in which students will learn new ways to look at their pets and hopefully their art, as well. Plus there will be an opportunity to meet and greet a handsome male model!

Preregistration is required. Please contact info@westportartgroup.com for further information.

Letter to the editor:

My name is Melissa Pacheco and I am pleased to announce that I am running for re-election for Westport School Committee.

I grew up in Westport, graduated from Westport High in 1992. My husband of 17 years, Joseph, a 1989 alum of Westport High, and I have two children, a 10 year old, who is a 4th grader at Westport Elementary and a daughter who died at 12 days old; she would be 14 today.

I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and a MBA from UMass Dartmouth. I have had the opportunity to work extensively with education budget development and expense monitoring and work closely with the business community to assist in creating and partnering on projects including workforce development, student career coaching, and community engagement and outreach. I also am an avid volunteer with a number of nonprofit organizations.

I have been blessed to have a number of experiences that I believe will continue to add value to the committee. I have listed a few below:

·         I have extensive fiscal management experience. From earning an Accounting degree and MBA, to over 10 years hands on experience with managing budgets, approving expenses, and financial reporting, to presenting a number of budget workshops.

·         I have extensive higher education experience. I have worked at UMass Dartmouth for over 20 years. I have knowledge of the skills required of individuals entering today’s global job market, from the importance of academic knowledge and the high need for soft skills such as communication, critical thinking and strategic planning. I also have marketing and project management experience and grant writing skills.

·         I am an honest, dedicated and caring individual. I am a Westport High Alum, parent, and town resident who makes fact based decisions on what is best for the majority, considering students first. My goal is to ensure our students receive the high quality education and extracurricular opportunities that they deserve in a safe environment.

Westport is not just a town, it is our town. I will fight tirelessly for our school district. Westport currently has a level 1 high school, STEM classes in our elementary school, children at the Macomber reading “1000 books,” and our junior high students building a boat with relevant curriculum that ties to our region!

We have additional advanced placement classes, sports teams in state tournaments, and spectacular drama productions, but we need to continue this positive trend in order for our students to have the competitive edge. During the last three years I have advocated for additional funding and space and have witnessed collaborations with town departments, dedicated parents and community volunteers and the drive and determination of many individuals working together to improve the lives of our students, which at the end of the day, is what it is all about.

While there have been improvements, more work is to be done. The School Committee has created goals, but we need to implement them and work towards making informed decisions. I have already created a number of documents that I think will help to improve the process including a decision making rubric and agenda question sheet. I am on the ground running and would like to continue to work towards improving communications, public relations, and school committee timelines and agendas.

I believe that I can bring the skills, education, and positive attitude that is needed to continue to improve and enhance our schools and town. I respectfully ask for your vote to re-elect Melissa Pacheco on April 12 so that I may continue to serve the town on the Westport School Committee. Please contact me with any questions or concerns, krp12102@yahoo.com or 508.971.0773.

Sincerely, Melissa Pacheco
