CRE-HAB home
repair program deadline extended to September 29, 2017. Individual awards up to $25,000 each for
qualifying existing homes in Westport. EverythingWestport.com Monday, May 22, 2017 WESTPORT – The Westport Affordable Housing Trust Fund is accepting
applications on a first-come, first-served basis for a housing rehabilitation
program called CRE-HAB. The Trust will receive
applications until the funds are exhausted, or no later than September 29,
2017. The Trust has nearly $190,000 in finance grant awards of up to $25,000
per home to help owners of properties assessed up to $250,000 to repair and
rehabilitate qualifying existing homes in Westport. The CRE-HAB grant
program is designed to provide direct financial assistance to low and
moderate income households in Westport in order to improve general housing
conditions and eliminate building code violations. The financial assistance
will be given in exchange for a 15-year affordable housing deed restriction
on the property. The deed restriction requires that upon any resale during
the 15-year restriction period, the home must be conveyed to an income and
asset eligible household through an affirmative fair marketing,
non-discriminatory process according to Dept. of Housing and Community
Development (DHCD) guidelines. In addition to the grants, the Trust is also reimbursing successful
applicants up to $500 toward initial home inspections or other inspections
that may be required for homes taking part in the program. Any
newly-restricted housing units would be counted on the town's Subsidized
Housing Inventory (SHI) for the 15-year life of the restriction. The Westport Affordable Housing Trust Fund has CRE-HAB
information and application packages available in the information rack on the
second floor of Westport Town Hall, 816 Main Road, and at the Westport Free
Public Library, 408 Old County Road. The program package can also be
downloaded by clicking here.

known” with Westport’s Cukie Macomber. Macomber regales audience with his personal experiences with 20th
century storms beginning with ‘38 hurricane. EverythingWestport.com Friday, May 12, 2017 Carlton “Cukie” Macomber, 91, of Westport has seen a lot in his
nine decades of living near the Atlantic Ocean, including his fair share of
hurricanes, nor’easters, and terrible blizzards. During his third, recent appearance at
the Dartmouth Historical & Arts Society’s Sunday evening lecture series, the
retired engineer, seaplane pilot, fisherman, and occasional sailor talked
about some of the greatest storms he has encountered during his 90-plus
years, both at sea and ashore. The following video presentation of May
2017 Macomber’s talk includes his recollections of
the Hurricane of ’38, which devastated Westport Point and the local fishing
community; the Hurricane of ’44, during which he served as a Coast Guard
Reserve seaman; Hurricane Carol in ’54, which left him scrambling to save his
seaplanes from heavy seas; and the Blizzard of ’78, the worst snow storm he’d
ever seen, stranding him in a Rhode Island church for three days, being fed
by kindly church ladies. And there’s more stories... the time he
sailed on the fishing boat Hilda, without life jackets or life boats when it
sank off South Dartmouth, leaving him and other seamen with the unhappy
choice of sinking or swimming... the only problem was, he couldn’t swim. “I
wrapped my arms around a five gallon fuel can, and jumped in,” kicking for nearby
Barney’s Joy until he touched ground, he recalled. “That was during a big
storm, too,” he remembered. Always informative and always
entertaining with his looks back at “the good old days” along the Westport
waterfront, Macomber spends this lecture talking about the darkest and
stormiest days he’s experienced, and survived during his 90-plus years on the
South Coast. The noted raconteur from Westport uses a cheat sheet of talking
points to keep him focused and on track these days, but he hasn’t lost any of
his sharp memory, or forgotten any of the hundreds of stories he has to tell
of his adventures on land and at sea. Click

Horseneck Beach parking lot Westport Summer Farmers’ Market moving
back to Central Village. EverythingWestport.com Sunday, May 14, 2017 Westport, MA –The Town's Economic Development Task Force will be
managing the upcoming Westport Summer Farmers’ Market. Several of the vendors who participated in our Winter Market last
November and December at the Town Hall Annex asked the Task Force to consider
managing the Summer Market after their winter success, and they
agreed. They are moving the 2017 Summer Market from the Town Farm property on
Drift Road where it has been for the past three years to the Westport Town
Annex, 856 Main Road in Central Village. Previous to the Drift Road site, the
Market had been at the Grange in Central Village for several years, but eventually
outgrew the location. The new Summer Market venue benefits both vendors and customers. For vendors, the new location adds
visibility from Main Road and will hopefully bring in more customers. It will also improve vendors’ ease of doing
business as they can park their pickup trucks directly behind their display
tables for easy access to product. For
customers, the new location makes it convenient for those doing business in
Central Village as part of their Saturday-morning routines. The Summer Market will be set up in the south parking area of the Town
Hall Annex, with parking for patrons on the front, north and back lots. The area is more than 8,000 square feet and
provides ample space for the many farmers, craftspeople and other vendors who
are enthused about taking part in the new Market. The Summer Farmers’ Market will be a showcase for the distinguished
variety of farmers from Westport and nearby towns, and will give consumers
the opportunity to buy fresh, locally-grown food, including vegetables, meat,
cheese and baked goods. Other vendors will include artisans and other independent sellers of
unique local items. The Market will run for 16 weeks, from Saturday, June 17th through
September 30th, 2017. The Task Force will be providing a list of all of this year’s
participants in late May. For more information, please call or click the Westport Summer Farmers’
Market contacts listed below: Westport Economic
