WRWA offers a $1000 merit award for graduating high school seniors living in the watershed area. The awards are an opportunity to honor students who are committed to protecting our watershed environment.

“This year, we had so many deserving scholarship applicants that we felt we should try to give more than one,” said Shelli Costa, WRWA education director.

All three recipients have either volunteered for the Watershed Alliance or benefited from the education programs the organization provides.

The sentiments of the applicants can be summed up by a quote from the submitted essay by Connor Brown: “As humans, our effect on the aquatic ecosystems can be either positive or negative; therefore, we need to consider how our actions impact the world around us. WRWA community-based educational programs and school-based research programs are key in teaching students the importance of protecting our local water systems and keeping Westport a beautiful coastal community.”

George Bancroft will attend UMass-Amherst in the fall with plans to become a wildlife biologist.Connor is enrolled at the University of South Carolina, where he will pursue an advanced degree in biology, and Aidan will study at the University of New Hampshire with hopes of becoming a biology teacher, or working for an environmental agency.

The Westport River Watershed Alliance Merit Award was created to celebrate the lives of William and Ruth Heath and Margo C.

Boote. William and Ruth Heath were committed to environmental issues and protection of the natural world. Margo C. Boote was very involved in her community and the world around her. She also had a deep connection with the environment, as was shown in her poetry.
