EverythingWestport.com The Westport Cultural Council is looking for community-oriented arts,
humanities, and science programs, and invites organizations, schools, and
individuals to apply for grants that will support cultural activities in our
community. Applications are available on-line Friday, September
1, 2017 with a deadline for all to be submitted by Monday, October 16th. WCC Chair, Carolyn Duby
stated, "These grants support a variety of artistic projects and
activities in Westport including concerts, field trips, short-term artist
residencies, workshops, and lectures. Our town has an exciting array of
programs because of the many groups funded by the WCC
grants. We look for new applicants each fall and invite those with
questions to contact us through our Facebook page or website: https://www.westport-ma.com.” The Westport Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local
Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The
state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts
Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each
community. WCC applauds our state Senator and
Representatives for recognizing how important these programs are locally and
continuing to support the Local Cultural Council funding. Above: The
2017 Dharma Voyage boat building project for students was a recipient

$4,000 in grants. Some of the 2016 WCC grantees
included: the Dharma Voyage boat building for students, programs at the
Westport Historical Society, Westport Free Public Library, and Westport
Elementary and High Schools, the Westport Fishermen's Association, the
Paskamansett Bird Club and the New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks! Teen Intern
program. For local guidelines and complete information on the Westport Cultural
Council, email Carolyn Duby, Chair, at carolynduby@ieee.org.
Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council
Program are available online at www.mass-culture.org.

Housing Opportunity Purchase
Program applications available until Tuesday, December 19th. The Trust will offer one grant
of up to $125,000 to an income and asset qualified household. EverythingWestport.com Wednesday, August 30, 2017 WESTPORT – The Westport Affordable Housing Trust Fund is accepting
applications on a first-come, first-served basis for another round of grant
funding through the Housing Opportunity Purchase Program (HOPP).
The deadline for filing HOPP applications will be 3
p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017. In this funding round, the Trust will offer one grant of up to
$125,000 to an income and asset qualified household for the purpose of
“buying down” the selling price of a two or three bedroom existing market
rate house in Westport. In addition, the program will reimburse each
potential home buyer up to $1,000 toward initial home inspections and any
additional inspections required under this program. To qualify for the HOPP program, households
must be eligible under the Department of Housing and Community Development
Local Initiative Program Guidelines as summarized below. To be eligible, the
combined gross annual income for all household members, from all sources in
the household must be at or below 80% of the Providence-Fall River Metro Area
Median Income (AMI) as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD). The homes purchased through this program will be subject to a deed
rider that will permanently restrict the value of the home and will require
that upon resale, the home be conveyed to an income and asset eligible
household through an affirmative fair marketing/non-discriminatory process
according to DHCD guidelines. The unit will be
eligible for inclusion on the town’s Subsidized Housing Inventory (SHI) list.
One qualified applicant will be eligible for the grant funds in this
cycle. Eligible participants must be approved by the state Department of
Housing and Community Development and get financing pre-approval from a
qualified lender. Buyers should be aware that sellers must be willing to work
with potential purchasers and the DHCD to complete
the process required to complete such subsidized
sales. Application packages are available in the information rack on the
second floor of Town Hall, 816 Main Road, Westport, and at the Westport Free
Public Library, 408 Old County Road, Westport. The information and application package is also available online at http://www.westport-ma.com/affordable-housing-trust-fund

The Shattuck! Featuring photographs by Ole Brodersen,
and paintings by Thorri Hringsson
and Stefan Boulter. EverythingWestport.com Wednesday, August 30, 2017 Photos | EverythingWestport.com The Dedee Shattuck Gallery is pleased to
present The North: Artists from Iceland and Norway, featuring
photographs by Ole Brodersen, and paintings by Thorri Hringsson and Stefan
Boulter. Exhibit runs from Friday, August 30th through
Sunday, October 1st; Artists’ Reception: Sunday, September 3, from 6:00 – 8:00
p.m. Ole Brodersen is the twelfth generation of his family to live on the small island of
Lyngør in southern Norway. The landscapes of Lyngør dominate his photographs. The son of a sail maker
and grandson of a sailor, Brodersen collects
materials associated with the sea, like sailcloth and rope that he fashions
to make floats, flags, and kites - sometimes using sparklers, LEDs, or other
light sources in his constructions. Forces of wind, currents and waves move
the materials, unveiling the power of nature as it composes and rearranges
these markers during the space-time of the exposure. Brodersen’s work was recently
shown at the Scandinavia House in New York City and was supported by the
Norwegian Consulate. His photographs have been mentioned in the New Yorker
and Harper‘s Magazine. He is member of Norwegian Society of Fine Art
Photographers, Norwegian Visual Artist‘s Association, and recently received
the city of Risør‘s art grant. Stefán Jóhann Boulter is an
Icelandic-American painter, born in Reykjavík. Boulter currently lives in a
town 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle, where he teaches at The Akureyri School of Visual Arts. Boulter’s work feature
staged portraits and compositions, focusing on symbolism derived from early
memories. The paintings are often meditations on nature: the sky, earth,
stars and our existence within them. His paintings focus on objects and
animals that have an aura and a presence that attracts, which, in his words,
“seek to be solid yet ethereal at the same time.” The paintings presented at Dedee Shattuck
Gallery are a kind of nature worship, containing ideas that have strong roots
in the Icelandic psyche. Boulter has exhibited extensively across the world,
including in New York City, Reykjavík, and Micronesia, Norway, Barcelonam and the Faroe Islands. His work had been
featured in many museums, including the National Gallery of the Faroe
Islands, The Akureyri Art Museum of Iceland, the Telemark of Norway, and the Reykjavík Art Museum. Thorri Hringsson was born in Reykjavík,
Iceland in 1966. He studied art at the Icelandic Collage of Art and
Crafts and in the Jan Van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht, The Netherlands.
He has taken an active part in the dynamic art scene in Iceland for the last
thirty years, focusing on Icelandic nature as his main subject. Since 1987 he has
participated in more than sixty private and group exhibitions in Iceland,
Europe and the USA and has been teaching drawing and painting at The
Reykjavík School of Art. Currently, Hringsson lives and works in
Reykjavík, Iceland. Dedee Shattuck Gallery, Partners Lane,
Westport, MA Gallery hours are Wed-Sat 10:00 – 5:00 p.m.
and Sun 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Artist receptions and exhibitions are free
