Tuesday, December 28 – OBITUARY - Kathleen F. (Kerrigan) Vincent, 91, of Westport passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021 at Kimwell Nursing & Rehabilitation. She was the wife of the late Charles R. Vincent.

 

Born in Fall River, daughter of the late Peter J. and Catherine (Murphy) Kerrigan, she had lived in Westport for the last 65 years. She was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1948. Mrs. Vincent was a Communicant of St. George Church, Westport. She enjoyed her trips to Cumberland Farms and dining at the Kozy Nook.

 

Survivors include 3 sons: Charles E. Vincent of Bristol, RI, Michael S. Vincent and his wife Linda of Westport and Brian P. Vincent and his wife Debora of Dartmouth; a grandson: Joshua Vincent; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was sister of the late Peter J. Kerrigan.

 

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Kimwell for their care and compassion.

 

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Wednesday, January 5, 2022 from the Potter Funeral Home at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church, Westport at 10 AM

 

Calling hours Tuesday 4 - 7 p.m.

 

Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.

Tuesday, December 21 – OBITUARY - John W. O'Brien, 69, of Westport, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Charlton Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. He was the longtime companion of Nancy Hill of Westport.

 

Mr. O'Brien was born in Fall River, son of the late John W. O'Brien, Sr. and the late Beatrice (Caouette) O'Brien and had resided in Westport for the past 30 years. He worked as a welder for Electric Boat, RI. He was an avid NASCAR fan who enjoyed horseback riding, riding his motorcycle and listening to music. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.

 

Survivors along with his companion include his son: John W. O'Brien of New Bedford; 5 sisters: Colleen Carrita, Diane Kronsberg, Patricia Gouveia, Yvette Johnson, Kathryn Custadio; brother: Michael O'Brien; 3 grandchildren: Molly, William and Robert O'Brien; along with several step-children; nieces and nephews.

 

Survivors along with his companion include his son: John W. O'Brien of New Bedford; 5 sisters: Colleen Carrita, Diane Kronsberg, Patricia Gouveia, Yvette Johnson, Kathryn Custadio; brother: Michael O'Brien; 3 grandchildren: Molly, William and Robert O'Brien; along with several step-children; nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late David O'Brien.

Memorial visitation to which relatives and friends are invited will be Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at the Potter Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m.

Interment will be private.

 

Tuesday, December 21 – OBITUARY - Damase A. "Jiggs" Giguere, 85, of Westport passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Catholic Memorial Home. He was the husband of Yvonne M. (Francoeur) Giguere.

 

Born in Swansea, son of the late Damase B. and Noemi "Rose" (Tanguay) Giguere, he was raised in Swansea and moved to Westport in 1963. Prior to retirement in April of 2005, he was the founder and former owner of New England Sanitation. He was also the co-owner of Fielden Street Garage in Fall River and co-owner of D&D Auto & Truck Repair in Fall River. Mr. Giguere was a Communicant of St. George Church, Westport. He was a former Selectman for the Town of Westport and was the past president of the Bristol County Selectman's Association. Jiggs enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, maintaining his bird and game farm and his race cars.

 

Including his wife, survivors include a son: Damase A. Giguere, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Middletown, RI; a daughter: Donna A. Giguere and her lifelong companion Christopher Graham of Westport; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was brother of the late George Giguere, Omer Giguere and Florida Trepanier.

 

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the Potter Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m.

 

Calling hours Monday 4-7 p.m.

 

Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.

Sunday, December 19 – OBITUARY - Gordon G. Costa, Jr., 57, of Westport, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Carol (Coroa) Costa.

A gentleman devoted to his family. He had many interests. He enjoyed playing his guitar, his love of music spanned from classical, blues, jazz & rock to heavy metal, he had an appreciation for it all. He enjoyed reading, doing puzzles and watching TV: politics & history as well as comedy and classic movies which his kids called “Dad’s Grey TV.” He loved travel, Europe and Bermuda being favorite destinations. He took his children on nightly bike rides and fishing from local waters, they were his biggest source of pride. He became a peewee soccer coach when his daughter expressed an interest in the sport, and he never missed a baseball, soccer or basketball game. He had a dedicated work ethic and was a stellar employee for the State of Massachusetts DOT for over 20 years, going out on calls at all hours or in the midst of a snowstorm. Loyalty to his job and exemplary performance was very important to him. Before his employment with the state, he worked as a driver for Quansett Nurseries in Dartmouth. He was an EMT at STAT Ambulance Co. and a volunteer firefighter for that town.

Besides his wife, Carol, he leaves a son Benjamin, daughter Emily & sister-in-law Sheila McQuillan, all of Westport.

His family would like to thank all of the nurses who cared for him and kind neighbors, friends and family who offered help and prayers during a difficult time,

Memorial Mass to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport at 10:00 a.m.

Memorial visitation will be Monday, January 3, 2022 at the Potter Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.

 

 

Wednesday, December 15 – OBITUARY - Wallace Fletcher, 88, of Westport, MA, peacefully passed away at Newport Hospital on Monday, December 13, 2021, with his family by his side.

 

Born in Peckville, PA, Wallace was the son of J. Wallace and Belle (Edwards) Fletcher A veteran of the Korean War, Wallace served as an Operations and Intelligence Specialist in the U.S. Army. After obtaining a BS from the University of Scranton, PA and attending an MBA program at the University of Delaware, Wallace began his career in Accounting and Business Management. Wallace met his wife of 53 years, Gaile (Tripp) Fletcher, while employed at Morse Twist Drill & Machine Co. in New Bedford. He went on to serve as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer for Algonquin Gas Transmission Company and as Controller at Fall River Gas Company while raising his two daughters in Westport, MA.

 

Always ready to help others, Wallace also worked as a Financial Consultant for a number of organizations in MA and RI. He served the Westport Federal Credit Union in various ways from 1999 until his passing, including three years as Chairman of the Board. He also served as Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Faxon Animal Rescue League in Fall River.

 

Wallace was a Mason and maintained membership with the Oriental Star Lodge No. 588 AF & AM and Aurora Lodge No. 523, both of PA, and the Noquochoke Lodge AF & AM of Westport.

 

While not working, Wallace was an avid reader, especially of great biographies and WWII history. He also enjoyed cooking a good Julia Child recipe on occasion.

 

Wallace is predeceased by his sister Phyllis Fletcher of Lynn, MA. Survivors include his wife Gaile Fletcher of Westport, MA; his daughter Jennifer Fletcher of Newport, RI; his daughter Heidi Gaul of Hingham, MA; and his grandchildren Francis and Owen Gaul of Hingham, MA.

 

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday, December 18, at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport, MA at 10:30 AM. Visitation will take place prior to the service at 9:00-10:30 a.m.

Interment to follow in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport, MA.

Wednesday, December 15 – OBITUARY - Hazel E. (DeForge) Clifford, 95, of Westport passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at home. She was the wife of the late Thomas Clifford. Born in Westport, daughter of the late Homer and Florence (Jollymore) DeForge, she was a lifelong resident of Westport.

 

Survivors include 2 sons: Paul Clifford of Westport and Thomas Clifford of South Carolina; a daughter: Nancy Hill of Westport; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

 

Services will be private

 

Tuesday, December 14 OBITUARY - EverythingWestport notes the passing of Thelma M. (Maines) Sullivan, of Westport, who passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021 with her family by her side after a brief illness. She was wife of the late William J. Sullivan.

 

Born in Fall River, daughter of the late Charles and Eleanor G. (Durfee) Maines, she had lived in Westport since 1947. She graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School, class of 1945. In her early years she worked at the American Thread Company and then at the Westport Federal Credit Union for 43 years, first as a teller, then as Assistant Treasurer before retiring. For another 25 years she served on the Board of Directors for the Credit Union. Always involved in politics, she worked at the Polls in Westport for years. She belonged to many organizations and served on their Board of Directors including, the Friends of the Westport Council on Aging, the Lions Club and Westport Business to Business. She was a member of the Westport Senior Center and was very proud of the fact she exercised faithfully three times a week for 21 years until Covid hit. She also enjoyed reminiscing about her travels through Europe with her best friend Ann. Mrs. Sullivan was a Communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport.

 

Surviving Thelma are her 3 daughters: Donna M. Cabral and her husband Jack of Westport, Debra L. Lambert and her husband Mark of Little Compton and Coleen A. Cote and her husband Larry of Westport; 6 grandchildren: Jason Hall, Jennifer Lambert, Kaitlin Donahue, Patrick Lambert, Jared Cote and Alexis Cote; 8 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was sister of the late Charles H. Maines and Eleanor R. Peckham-Connolly.

 

A special thank you to the Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice for their excellent care, compassion and kindness.

 

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Friday, December 17, 2021 from the Potter Funeral Home at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m.

Tuesday, December 14 OBITUARY - EverythingWestport notes the passing of, Dianne M. "Nana B" (McGough) LaPlante74, of Westport, peacefully passed away at home on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 with her family by her side. She was the wife of Ronald W. LaPlante.

 

Mrs. LaPlante was born in Cambridge, daughter of the late John C. McGough, Jr. and the late Ann M. (Sullivan) McGough and had resided in Westport for most of her life. Prior to retirement, she worked as a waitress at the Kozy Nook Restaurant, Westport for over 30 years. She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. She enjoyed cooking, dancing and shopping. Most of all, she loved spending time with family.

 

Survivors along with her husband include her children: Christine Spooner, Laurie Rapoza, Michelle Costa, Jennifer Phillips, Denise Mello, Carrie Silvia, Suzanne Oliveira and Randy LaPlante; her brother: John M. McGough; her sister: Jacqueline Maitland; 21 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, December 14, 2021 from the Potter Funeral Home at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport at 10:00 a.m.

 

Calling hours will be Monday from 5-8 p.m.

 

Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River.

Tuesday, December 14 OBITUARY - EverythingWestport notes the passing of Barbara A. (Brayton) Smith, 94, of Westport, passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the companion of the late Joseph Sniezek.

 

Ms. Smith was born in Fall River, daughter of the late Byron A. and Gertrude K. (Pike) Brayton and had resided in Florida for many years before recently moving to Westport. She was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1945. Prior to retirement, she worked in retail at both Sears and the former Edgars, Fall River. She was a longtime member of the Moose Club in Florida, an organization that she enjoyed being a part of. For 19 years, Ms. Smith volunteered at and was very well known at Palm Bay Hospital, Florida.

 

Survivors include her children: James W. Smith, Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Little Compton, Judith A. Ferreira and her husband Anthony of Westport and Thomas R. Smith and his wife Dianna of TX; 4 grandchildren: Cathy Vose, Tyler Smith, Rebecca Leverett and Kira Smith; 4 great grandchildren: Emma Rothrock, Colin Smith, Kady Smith and Matthew Leverett; along with many nieces and nephews.

 

She was the former wife of the late James W. Smith and sister of the late Byron A. Brayton Jr., Kenneth Brayton, Marjorie Wood and Dana M. Brayton.

 

Arrangements are private.

 

Tuesday, December 14 OBITUARY - EverythingWestport notes the passing of Barbara A. (Cabral) O'Dwyer, 89, of Westport, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Sarah S. Brayton Nursing Center in Fall River. She was the former wife of James O'Dwyer.

 

Born in Fall River, daughter of the late James and Helen (McCarthy) Cabral, she had lived in Westport since 1958. Prior to retirement, she was an executive secretary at the former Anderson Little in Fall River. She was a Communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. Mrs. O'Dwyer was a lover of animals and the theatre and was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. She also enjoyed attending her Senior Club with her friends.

 

Survivors include a son: Michael J. O'Dwyer and his wife Nelia of Westport; a daughter: Kathleen Coelho and her husband Antonio of Fall River; 3 grandchildren: James Coelho, Jay O'Dwyer and Colleen O'Dwyer; 3 great grandchildren: Toby, Drew and Reid Coelho; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was mother of the late Colleen A. (O'Dwyer) Harrington and great grandmother of the late Lena Beth Coelho.

 

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Saturday, December 4, 2021 at the Potter Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m.

 

Calling hours will be Friday from 3 - 5 p.m.

Tuesday, December 14 OBITUARY - EverythingWestport notes the passing of John W. Andrade, Jr., 72 of Westport, passed away on Thursday, November 25, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospital.

 

Born in Newport, RI, son of the late John W. and Emilia (Antunes) Andrade, he was a lifelong resident of Westport. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served his country in the United States Navy. Prior to retirement, he was a firefighter for the Town of Westport, working as a lieutenant from 1990-2021. Mr. Andrade was a boxing aficionado, comic collector, enjoyed going on cruises and spending time with his pet dog Stark, but most of all he loved attending any performance of his granddaughters. He was also an investor and a fan of FAN E2G SPORTS.COM.

 

Survivors include his son: John W. "Buddy" Andrade, III of Westport; his longtime daughter-in-law: Carolyn (Catulo) Andrade of New Bedford; 2 sisters: Sandra Roberts of NY and Marcia Stassi of NY; 2 granddaughters: Hadleigh and Braelyn; Buddy's 2 sisters: Erina Cordeiro of Rochester and Sarah Rounseville of Rochester; his former companion: Laura Ferreira of Wareham; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was brother of the late Gary Andrade.

 

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, November 30, 2021 from the Potter Funeral Home at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church, Westport at 10:00 a.m.

 

Calling hours Monday 4 - 7 a.m.
