The Westport Women’s Club Rockettes rocked up a storm of cash for their scholarship fund, while three generations of moms and moms-to-be decorated a Mother’s Day cake at Lees Market. Not to be outdone, another three generations comprised of Sue Smith (President), her daughter Sandy Thurston, and granddaughter Susan Thurston, 14-years-old, rocked side-by-side at Lees Market to the malt shop music piped in over Lees sound system. “We’re here to fill the jars,” Said Sue Smith over the strains of Peggy Lee singing “Who’s Sorry Now!” that never seems to fall out of fashion.

Westport Women’s Club members rocked in Sue Smith’s impossibly blue, six wooden rockers from her back porch that were brought to Lees for the occasion. The 50’s music playing on Lees sound system was accompanied by Sky and Friends, a guitar-strummin’ duo rocking to there own beat.

The Westport Woman's Club hosted its annual Rock-a-Thon from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m., with 15 club members working in two to four hour shifts. “It’s hard work,” said Joan Amaral, “but someone’s gotta do it!”  “This is our annual fund raiser for monies to be used for scholarships for deserving students,” added Elsie Buess.  I got the message and dropped a $5 bill into the jar, as did many others throughout the day. It was a worthy cause.

If you couldn’t make it to the store, get in touch with anyone of their members to make a donation. In the past they have given as many as seven $500.00 scholarships.  They hope to do this in 2008 also.  "We rocked them in the cradle and now we'll rock them into college," said Pat Dean, Chairwoman of their Scholarship Committee. Meanwhile, at the other end of the building in the Lees Community Room, Lees Market was also sponsoring their Annual Mother’s Day Cake Decorating from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many of the young, and not so young, came in to decorate and take home a special Mother’s Day cake for their deserving mothers! And you didn’t even have to sign up!
