“We did very well in flower sales this year,” reports
Patricia Bennett, WRG President. “What a successful
day it was! In all our past Garden Sales we trucked out the remaining plants.
This year we will plant our few remaining flowers in settings around town.”
That’s the Westport River Gardeners; beautifying Westport one small plot at a
time!
“We sold
all of our heirloom tomato plants early on,” Elizabeth Newton of Dartmouth
said. “If I would have known, we would have brought more!”
It was a
gray, drizzly morning, but the day quickly moved into a lovely warm afternoon
at the Macomber Community Center. Many turned out to support this wonderful neighborhood
group.
The Westport
River Gardeners is a club for learning, sharing and community service. Their goals
are to beautify their community while helping each other. “We enrolled 12 new
members today,” Ms. Bennett said. “That’s phenomenal!”
WRG
members Florence Lees and Patricia Butler said the sale of raffle tickets was
brisk. “We have a whole bucketful of tickets,” exclaimed Ms. Lees. “Everybody
wants the garden wagon.” WRG member and event
chairperson Geri Fortier made a beautiful matching garden jacket and tool
utility tote bag for the raffle, as did Betty Deveue
who made a quilted bag. “A lot of our members not only donated their time and
effort,” said Ms. Bennett. “Many also donated plants and raffle items.”

“We wish to
thank our many generous donors, among which are Pete’s Nursery and Garden
Center who donated a gift certificate, and Steve Hancock of Northstar
Farm in Westport who donated many perennials,” said Ms. Bennett. “All proceeds
went to support the efforts of the Westport River Gardeners.”
Major
raffle winners were:
Susan
