Fields and Crops of Westport Agriculture
has been restructuring itself in New England, and Westport is no exception.
Sustenance farming has long given way to more practical commercial needs.
Crops such as silage, hay, and animal feed corn now consume more of our
local farmlands. But suburbanized society has developed specialized needs,
and Westport farmers have been quick to adapt. Local vineyards, cut flower
distributors, ornamental corn and gourds, berry producers, plant, tree
and shrub suppliers, and gourmet produce and herbs for high-end restaurants
have combined with every-day farm staples such as apples, peaches, sweet
corn, squash, and our very own local Macomber turnips to allow smaller
output farms to compete with other land uses, such as residential development.
All this diversity has also encouraged the sprouting of a plethora of
local farms stands (see Farm Stands of Westport). Small
