We
all have our own ideas of heaven. For some, it’s white clouds and harps;
for others, an eternal shore of silence. But perhaps you’re one of those
souls (and I know you’re out there) who imagine an endless swirl of
beautifully bad old movies — a place where the acting is always overripe,
the plots as thick as oatmeal and the taste level close to the gutter. If
this describes you, paradise awaits you, friend, just south of Houston
Street.

Mixed Media at Dedee Shattuck Gallery. Exhibit runs through Sunday,
June 3rd.
Click here for a virtual tour.

Roger Kizik's
art works are immediately recognizable as his - regardless of medium,
size or subject matter. He paints with surety, sense of humor, and
imagination. Kizik’s brightly colored images
boldly careen in and out of representation and abstraction, resulting in
exuberant collisions of texture and form. Kizik
began his education in the US Navy, before receiving his BFA at the
Massachusetts College of Art in 1972. A fascination with marine
technologies along with a seafarer's sense of adventure is clearly palpable
in his work. Kizik experiments with mixed media,
resulting in layered and textured surfaces, which are as stimulating as the
imagery he creates.
Opening receptions are free of
admission and open to the public.

Edward MacDowell: Concerto No. 2 for Piano in D Minor
Aaron Copland: Symphony No. 3
Free Concert Prelude: Join Dr. David MacKenzie
for an informal talk on the evening’s program at 6:45PM in the theater.
With
the compositional craft that won her the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in Music (as
well as a Grammy), Jennifer Higdon begins blue cathedral with
whispering strings and a cautious but gradually hopeful melody. Higdon
tosses the melody from one woodwind to another, before a solo violin
catches hold of it and brings it to the building intensity of the full
orchestra, which rises and falls with it many times through the rest of the
piece. If this sounds like it could be describing a day, a week or a year
in your life, that is because in blue cathedral Higdon wanted “to reflect
on the amazing journeys that we all make in our lives, crossing paths with
so many individuals singularly and collectively, learning and growing each
step of the way.”

Fall River Symphony Orchestra
87th Concert Season

Margaret L.
Jackson Arts Center Theater
Bristol Community
College
The
Fall River Orchestral Club was founded in 1925 by a group of fifteen
players who wanted the opportunity to play orchestral music. They had all
played chamber music but wanted to broaden their scope of performance. This
was the foundation laid seventy-five years ago. They set as their reason
for existence "to encourage interest in good music and to give players
an opportunity to join in orchestral works, and to build up a Fall River
Symphony Orchestra, not as an organization for profit, but rather a
contribution to the musical life of the community and source of pleasure
and musical development to those who are members of it". This policy
has endured for all of these years and the present Board of Directors has
endorsed it for the future.
Concerts
are normally held at Margret L. Jackson Arts Center Theater, Bristol
Community College.
Sponsored
by St. Anne’s Credit Union.
Seating
is limited. Tickets are available at SACU branch locations, at the door, or
by calling (508) 252-3975.
Since 1989 to the present season, the orchestra has
rehearsed and given their concerts in the Margaret L. Jackson Arts Center
of Bristol Community College.

"Set in an
unnamed country that is, like the author's native Chile, emerging from a
totalitarian dictatorship, the play explores the after effects of
repression on hearts and souls. Paulina Escobar's husband Gerardo is to
head an investigation into past human rights abuses. A Dr. Miranda stops at
the Escobars' to congratulate Gerardo. Paulina
overhears them speaking and is convinced that Miranda supervised her prison
torture sessions. She ties him to a chair and conducts her own
interrogation, gun in hand. Escobar doesn't know whether to believe his
distraught wife or his persuasive new friend. This white knuckle thriller
is a riveting intellectual and emotional tug of war."

Boston Marriage, by David Mamet

Roger Williams
University’s Performing Arts Center Directed by Jeffrey Martin
"Anna and
Claire are two bantering, scheming "women of fashion" who have
long lived together on the fringes of upper-class society. Anna has just
become the mistress of a wealthy man, from whom she has received an
enormous emerald and an income to match. Claire, meanwhile, is infatuated
with a respectable young lady and wants to enlist the jealous Anna's help
for an assignation. As the two women exchange barbs and take turns taunting
Anna's hapless Scottish parlor maid, Claire's young inamorata suddenly
appears, setting off a crisis that puts both the valuable emerald and the
women's futures at risk. To this wickedly funny comedy, Mamet brings his
trademark tart dialogue and impeccable plotting, spiced with Wildean wit."

An evening of great live roots music!
Mark
Cutler & Men Of Great Courage (Jimmy Berger,
Rick Couto, Bob Kirkman,
Dick Reed) combine powerful lyrics with memorable melodies and driving
rhythms. Mark's guitar-driven tunes are played and sung at every gig as if
for the very first time. Come see why this gifted guitarist and
award-winning singer/songwriter received the Providence Phoenix 2010 Male
Vocalist award. Mark served as frontman for The
Schemers and The Raindogs, and, with The Raindogs, toured in support of Bob Dylan and Warren Zevon. He continues to release award-winning CDs with
bands such as Men of Great Courage and The Dino Club.
Red
Eye Flight (Derek Escher, Tim Murphy, Ken Taylor, Kelly
Cleveland, Rand Torman) formed in Rhode Island in
2005. Founded on strong vocal harmonies, the band plays original songs and
Americana covers. Red Eye Flight incorporates electric and acoustic
instrumentation to create soundscapes that are
evocative of this country, from western highways to the open ocean.
