The ladies of the kitchen serving scrumptious snacks and lunch for the
hundreds of visitors. Where
else can you buy a mixer for a penny? Apparently not many as hundreds of
hopeful shoppers came from towns all around Westport to attend St. John the
Baptist’s annual Penny Sale. In addition to sponsoring a profitable event,
the sale’s social aspect was undeniable. Every $1 ticket was eligible for
each of the 145 donated items. “Normally, we have 100 items, and a $1 ticket
is eligible for every one of them,” said Claudette Lindo,
event organizer. “That makes it a penny sale. But we have 145 items, so I
guess everybody gets a bargain today! And the money we raise goes for
scholarships and to help out the parish, Ms. Lindo
said.” It’s a win-win situation for everyone, Claudette! Canvassing and Kale Soup at

The Boston University Opera Institute brought
a quartet of its advanced singers under the direction of William Lumpkin to
Westport for a classic opera performance at the Westport Point United
Methodist Church. It was a sterling CAP concert that concluded the
sophisticated chamber music series for 2007/2008. This season was dedicated
to the CAP founder and impresario Rosamond Wadsworth for her vision and
tireless energy in producing Concerts at the Point. Brian Medeiros of
Dartmouth Orchards provided the refreshments for intermission. Candidates Night at the Middle School - Wednesday, March 26. Return to Index

Dial-up speed | Broadband/DSL speed | 175 town residents came out and heard the candidates who are
running for public office address the concerns and share their vision for
Westport at the Annual Community
Sponsored Candidates Night at 7 p.m. in the Middle
School auditorium. The moderator for the evening was Carlos Costa, who had a fairly
easy time of it as candidates were given a timed, but free rein to present
themselves and their cases, and really didn’t face any hardball questions
from the moderator or the audience. The Highway Surveyor ‘wanabees’
took their shots at Jack Sisson and their lively exchanges were the only
contentious moments of the night. Sponsor
representatives from Westport Business to Business, The Southcoast Tribune,
Westport Elementary and Macomber School Parent Teacher Organization, Westport
Friends of the Council of Aging, the Parents Association Westport High
School-PTA, and the Westport Watershed Alliance attended the event but didn’t
appear to take an active role in questioning the candidates. With all the
serious issues facing our town it was a shame that the press or other
self-interest groups didn’t take the opportunity to challenge the candidates
and get a meaningful dialogue going other than just picking at the scabs of
the incumbents’ minor gaffes while in office. David Emilita (Planning Board) was the only unopposed candidate to
speak with the audience. It was a pleasant, social evening as the gadflies stayed home.
Claude Leduoux, the ever vigilant watchdog of the
public interest, posed a serious concern to Steve Oulettee,
and David Dionne, former selectman, followed up on the issue of the town’s now
defunct wind turbine. It was grand to learn a bit more about the candidates
personally, but we need to face the town’s tough issues head-on, and the best
way to do that is to elect the right people to do the job right. View the photo album

event featured: Sticks and Stones

spinning; and Abbie Chambers from Moon Tide Dyers - practical fashion
design! Partners is doing a bang-up job of making themselves a community

Dial-up speed | Broadband/DSL speed | The four candidates vying for two seats on the Board of
Selectmen, and others running for Westport offices were guests of the
Westport Senior Center on Wednesday, and faced an array of prepared questions
from interim COA Director Ted Lang, who moderated
the event. Candidates had an opportunity to present opening remarks, and then
faced poignant questions about their views on Westport’s future direction.
Issues ranged from public safety to wind power and alternate energy sources, to the Board of Selectmen’s handling of
volunteer committee members, taxes, 40B developments, and senior issues.
Unopposed candidates Marlene Samson -, Town Clerk, Carol Borden - Tax
Collector; and David Emilita - Planning Board were present and spoke briefly
to the senior attendees. One audience member spoke of intergenerational
activities, and encouraged the town’s use of qualified, retired seniors in
the educational system. Highway Supervisor candidates Jack Sisson and Quentin
Lord briefly squared off over the issue of the retention pond at the Head of
Westport, but for the most part the candidates’ coffee hour was very cordial
and informative, and gave seniors a chance to meet the political contenders. St. Patty’s Day rocks at the COA! – March 17, 2008 Return

Marc Deschenes whipped up a capacity crowd of 38
attendees at the St. Patrick’s Day GALA at the Westport Senior Center on Monday afternoon. Seniors from afar as
the Fairhaven Senior Center got out their “green” and visited the Westport
Senior Center for lunch, Irish song and dance, and good ol’
rock and roll! Marc Deschenes is a vocalist/guitarist/MIDI musician who
utilizes the latest in computerized instrumental back up, wireless and sound
reinforcement. His musical selection ranges from the '50s to the '90s. He brought
his A game to the Senior Center! Gloria Santos, the Center’s Director of Supportive Day Programs said,”The corn beef and cabbage
luncheon for just $2 always brings them in. And we especially reserve the
best in entertainment, much more lively, for special occasions such as this.”
Job well
done guys! The Westport COA is a rocking group themselves, with marquis programs for our seniors,
and a well maintained and equipped community senior center. All of Westport
should vigorously support this important town asset. Westporters get to meet Mercy Etta Baker at the Bell

No-limit Texas hold’em has captivated the imagination of
millions of novice poker players across the globe, popularized by the movie Rounders starring Matt Damon, and the success of
amateur poker players winning the World Series of Poker, starting with Chris
Moneymaker in 2003. The 2006 World Series of Poker champion (an amateur)
received over 12 million dollars in winnings, more than Golf’s 2007 Masters
champion and all other individual skill tournament champions combined! I decided
to investigate this phenomenon by attending the Westport-based Levin Dubai
