The Westport Grange held a flea market at 931 Main Road with 13 different vendors supporting the effort to raise funds for the Westport Farmers Market. “It went very well and we are very pleased,” said Beth Easterly of the Grange. “The 13 vendors were a nice mix of people cleaning out attics, to artisans, to people selling their old household items.”  The Grange is re-inventing itself to continue its long-standing tradition of supporting the social structure of our farming community. They need and deserve your support!

Clockwise from upper left: (1) Claudette Lindo, event organizer, said, “The penny sale always packs them in!” (2) This handsome group from Swansea and Tiverton said they come every year. (3) Ilene from Swansea is busy filling out her tickets. (4) A visitor checks out the penny tables before the start of the drawings. (4) Claire from Somerset anxiously waits for the start of the Penney Sale. (5) The ladies of the kitchen serving scrumptious snacks and lunch for the hundreds of visitors.

Where else can you buy a mixer for a penny? Apparently not many as hundreds of hopeful shoppers came from towns all around Westport to attend St. John the Baptist’s annual Penny Sale. In addition to sponsoring a profitable event, the sale’s social aspect was undeniable. Every $1 ticket was eligible for each of the 145 donated items. “Normally, we have 100 items, and a $1 ticket is eligible for every one of them,” said Claudette Lindo, event organizer. “That makes it a penny sale. But we have 145 items, so I guess everybody gets a bargain today! And the money we raise goes for scholarships and to help out the parish, Ms. Lindo said.” It’s a win-win situation for everyone, Claudette!

175 town residents came out and heard the candidates who are running for public office address the concerns and share their vision for Westport at the Annual Community Sponsored Candidates Night at 7 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium. The moderator for the evening was Carlos Costa, who had a fairly easy time of it as candidates were given a timed, but free rein to present themselves and their cases, and really didn’t face any hardball questions from the moderator or the audience. The Highway Surveyor ‘wanabees’ took their shots at Jack Sisson and their lively exchanges were the only contentious moments of the night.  Sponsor representatives from Westport Business to Business, The Southcoast Tribune, Westport Elementary and Macomber School Parent Teacher Organization, Westport Friends of the Council of Aging, the Parents Association Westport High School-PTA, and the Westport Watershed Alliance attended the event but didn’t appear to take an active role in questioning the candidates. With all the serious issues facing our town it was a shame that the press or other self-interest groups didn’t take the opportunity to challenge the candidates and get a meaningful dialogue going other than just picking at the scabs of the incumbents’ minor gaffes while in office. David Emilita (Planning Board) was the only unopposed candidate to speak with the audience.

It was a pleasant, social evening as the gadflies stayed home. Claude Leduoux, the ever vigilant watchdog of the public interest, posed a serious concern to Steve Oulettee, and David Dionne, former selectman, followed up on the issue of the town’s now defunct wind turbine. It was grand to learn a bit more about the candidates personally, but we need to face the town’s tough issues head-on, and the best way to do that is to elect the right people to do the job right.

This event featured: Sticks and Stones Bunny Farm - bunny holding and petting; Pat Flores & the Bayberry Spinners - the art of yarn spinning; and Abbie Chambers from Moon Tide Dyers - practical fashion design!

The four candidates vying for two seats on the Board of Selectmen, and others running for Westport offices were guests of the Westport Senior Center on Wednesday, and faced an array of prepared questions from interim COA Director Ted Lang, who moderated the event. Candidates had an opportunity to present opening remarks, and then faced poignant questions about their views on Westport’s future direction. Issues ranged from public safety to wind power and alternate energy sources, to the Board of Selectmen’s handling of volunteer committee members, taxes, 40B developments, and senior issues. Unopposed candidates Marlene Samson -, Town Clerk, Carol Borden - Tax Collector; and David Emilita - Planning Board were present and spoke briefly to the senior attendees. One audience member spoke of intergenerational activities, and encouraged the town’s use of qualified, retired seniors in the educational system. Highway Supervisor candidates Jack Sisson and Quentin Lord briefly squared off over the issue of the retention pond at the Head of Westport, but for the most part the candidates’ coffee hour was very cordial and informative, and gave seniors a chance to meet the political contenders.

Musician Marc Deschenes whipped up a capacity crowd of 38 attendees at the St. Patrick’s Day GALA at the Westport Senior Center on Monday afternoon. Seniors from afar as the Fairhaven Senior Center got out their “green” and visited the Westport Senior Center for lunch, Irish song and dance, and good ol’ rock and roll!

Marc Deschenes is a vocalist/guitarist/MIDI musician who utilizes the latest in computerized instrumental back up, wireless and sound reinforcement. His musical selection ranges from the '50s to the '90s. He brought his A game to the Senior Center!

Gloria Santos, the Center’s Director of Supportive Day Programs said,”The corn beef and cabbage luncheon for just $2 always brings them in. And we especially reserve the best in entertainment, much more lively, for special occasions such as this.”

Job well done guys! The Westport COA is a rocking group themselves, with marquis programs for our seniors, and a well maintained and equipped community senior center. All of Westport should vigorously support this important town asset.

No-limit Texas hold’em has captivated the imagination of millions of novice poker players across the globe, popularized by the movie Rounders starring Matt Damon, and the success of amateur poker players winning the World Series of Poker, starting with Chris Moneymaker in 2003. The 2006 World Series of Poker champion (an amateur) received over 12 million dollars in winnings, more than Golf’s 2007 Masters champion and all other individual skill tournament champions combined!

The centuries-old tradition of an elegant afternoon tea party where women could sit amongst themselves and share thoughts only they could appreciate has been rekindled, if only for an hour, as Partners Village Store hosted their annual Valentines Day Tea Party.

Guests enjoyed their spot of tea with sweets and savories, served elegantly with silver & linen in the comfort of Partners "Tea Room" café, while tea party music unfolded in the background. One table held four generations of five ladies in what is sure to be a very memorable occasion for the two younger children!

Don’t worry if you missed this sold-out event; Partners will be sponsoring their St. Patrick’s day tea party on March 14th at 3 p.m. Come and celebrate a bit o’ the Irish with award winning Traditional Irish Storyteller, Folk Singer & Raconteur Maggi Pierce, as she entertains with material ranging from her Northern Irish background to life in these United States. The New Bedford Whaling Museum will never be the same. Sorry Mr. Melville!

Under the bleached bones of a Blue Whale, the Blues Train Band released their inaugural CD to hundreds of friends, well-wishers, and music lovers of all ages. Johnny Cake Hill was celebratin’!

"This album is about our diversity," says bassist Gerry Dupont. "There's definitely an eclectic mix." The 11-song CD was recorded at Bongo Beach Studios in Fall River. The entire process lasted from January 2007 to last November.

The night opened with a reception in the Jacobs Family Gallery with complimentary hors d'oeuvre from Partners Village Store and Waterstreet Cafe, and a cash bar from Cardoza's. A little after 7 the party moved into the museum theater for a performance of the original songs that are contained on the CD. The Westport blues quintet notched it up for their appreciative audience, performing to a standing room, spill-over crowd. Fired up by the overwhelming support of the crowd, it is this observer’s opinion that the Blues Train Band was never better.

What’s next? “It was a memorable night,” Dori Legge bubbled with enthusiasm! “Look for our next CD release party at the Waterstreet Cafe.”
