Latest Mystery Photo solved!

Our latest Mystery Photo posted on Monday, July 18th at 7:05 p.m. was first solved by Jim Walsh on July 18th at 8:44 p.m. as the “ice cream stand at Woods.”

It seems the ice cream stand was no mystery to most Westporters who can be found there often any time of day during the hot summer months.

Thanks to all those who participated – get ready for another mystery photo soon!

Our last Mystery Photo posted on Columbus Day, October 12th at 2:20 p.m. was correctly identified.

Gerry Santos of Westport correctly identified on Monday, October 12th at 5:43 p.m. the location as “Gray’s general store in Adamsville, RI.”

Gerry by knowing the exact location of the photo wins a $25 gift certificate to Lees Supermarket, Westport’s hot social spot with great groceries too!

Congratulations Jerry!

Be on the lookout for our next Mystery Photo to win a valuable gift certificate to one of Westport’s hot social spots!

This mystery photo shows Lizabeth Cottrell of Tiverton doing a cane restoration to an antique chair on the steps of Grays Store, where she has been the entire summer! For repair of natural cane, paper and twisted rush, Hong Kong grass or splint, give Lizabeth a call at 401.624.4928 or visit her website.

A Mystery Photo posted on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 2:05 p.m. was correctly identified on September 29th at 12:32 p.m. as It’s Sawdy Pond from rt 177!” by Mark Orzeck of Westport.

You were told it would be difficult; it took three days rather than three minutes to solve!

By being the first to correctly identify the location Mark won a $25 gift certificate to Ten Cousins Brick Oven, Westport’s trendiest restaurant specializing in brick oven pizza, salads, pasta and more.

Watch for our next mystery photo and be ready to email your best guess to:

EverythingWestport@hotmail.com.

Another recent Mystery Photo was solved on Monday, August 17, 2015 at 11:18 a.m.

It took Westport’s Jim Walsh just three minutes to respond with a correct identification of our last Mystery Photo:

Walsh was the first to correctly identify at 11:18 a.m. the location as “Mystery photo are two of the windmills at Noquochoke Orchards - Drift Rd.”

For his ever-so-speedy answer, Jim will enjoy the fantastic fare at Ten Cousins Brick Oven, and the rest of you who guessed (and there were many!) will just have to wait for the next mystery photo which we promise to post in the next few days.

Another recent Mystery Photo was solved on Monday, June 29th at 8:55 a.m.

Mystery Photo Solved! Congratulations to Westport’s Gerry Santos who was the first to correctly guess on Monday, June 29th at 8:55 a.m. our latest mystery photo’s location as “Noquochoke Orchards Drift Rd.”

Jerry is rewarded for his powers of observation with a $25 gift certificate to the Back Eddy Restaurant, Westport’s fine dining seafood restaurant overlooking the Westport Harbor!

We had many readers correctly guess the location, so apparently the excavator is old but not forgotten!

Be on the lookout for our next mystery photo; it’ll be right around the corner!

Get ready to email your best guess on our next Mystery Photo to

EverythingWestport@hotmail.com.

A previous Mystery Photo posted on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 10:05 a.m. was correctly identified on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at 10:39 a.m. by Geri Fortier who guessed “Lobster pots at the Point.”

Because Geri was the first to correctly identify the location of our “New Year’s” mystery photo, she wins a $25 gift certificate to White’s of Westport/Bittersweet Farm, always a great meal at a great price!

Be on the lookout for our next mystery photo and get ready to

email your best guess to

EverythingWestport@hotmail.com.

An earlier Mystery Photo was identified by Westport Main Road resident Chuck Goldberg. Chuck correctly guessed, The Paquachuck Inn has this Christmas greeting, on the side.”

The Photo was originally posted on Monday, December 8, 2014 at 4:15 p.m.

Chuck made his guess on Wednesday, December 10th at 3:12 p.m.

Because he was the first to correctly identify the location of our “holiday” mystery photo, Chuck wins a $25 gift certificate to Lees Market, Westport’s local and convenient one-stop supermarket for all your grocery needs.

Chuck took his best shot and won.

And another earlier Mystery Photo posted on October 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. was identified in a wink of the eye and an even faster tap on the keyboard!

Many knew the location but weren’t as quick as Donald Krudys of Westport in submitting it. “Observatory at UMass Dartmouth facing Old Westport Rd North Dartmouth“ was Donald’s correct answer, and for that he wins a $25 gift certificate to Ten Cousins Brick Oven, Westport’s newest restaurant specializing in brick oven pizza, salads, pasta and more.

Donald delivered the answer, faster than the Domino’s pizza guy, at 9:40 p.m. the same day the photo was posted.

To View our photo album of more dramatic Cloudscapes of Westport, Westport, click here.

*Starting 02/11/2010 we will be limiting immediate families to one gift certificate won per month. EverythingWestport has increased the number of mystery photos per year and we would like everybody to have a chance at participating. Also, you may take as many guesses as you want for a mystery photo, but please only one guess at a time.

The band's first live show in the early 1980's was a support slot for Sam & Dave, and they also supported Jerry Lee Lewis, the Ramones, Tom Verlaine and Dead Kennedys.

Band members from the original lineup included Jimmy Berger, Rene Blais, Emerson Torrey, and lead singer and song writer Mark Cutler.
Cutler announced his decision to leave the band in 1986, but continued to play with the band in 1987 for their remaining live commitments, the band finally splitting up in January 1987.
Mark Cutler later founded the nationally recognized rock band The Raindogs who recorded on Atlantic Record label, Atco Records, with former Red Rockers rhythm section Darren Hill and Jim Reilly (of Stiff Little Fingers), and Celtic fiddle king Johnny Cunningham, formerly of Silly Wizard. Emerson Torrey joined the band after original guitarist Ty Avolio left in 1987. Cutler also went on to play in Men of Great Courage, the Tiny String Band, Dino Club, and Forever Young.
The Schemers only album was released in 2004; Remember compiled their earlier recordings as well as ten new recordings.
The band reformed several times for live performances, including shows in 2010 with Cutler, Berger, and Torrey, joined by drummer Bob Giusti and keyboard player Richard Reed. Giusti was replaced by drummer Rick Couto in 2010. The Schemers continue to perform several times a year
In 2015 The Schemers were inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame.

The site allows to search for and display the assessors’ map of a parcel of land and to add additional information such as soil types, wetlands, zoning and aerial photos to that map. Users may also view an interactive map of the entire town, adding their desired information, then zooming to an area of interest.

It will be useful to anyone interested in their own property, to anyone interested in developing a property, and to those interested in the physical and cultural characteristics of Westport.

The site is accessed via a link on the town’s website: http://www.westport-ma.com/ where a tip sheet is also available. A video tutorial will be available in the near future via the town website. The project, which will be improved an updated yearly, is a joint effort of the Planning Board and the Board of Assessors, with funding from the data processing department.

A glimpse into 20th century rum-running in Westport. Wednesday, May 07, 2014

Westport’s Cukie Macomber shares a memory on the town’s rum-running days.

“In October 1919, our federal government passed the Volstead Act that began an era called “Prohibition.” This law, which lasted 14 years, prohibited the manufacture, sale and possession of liquor. It also helped a new Westport business to flourish: rum-running.

Rumrunners included local fishermen, boat owners and other local lawbreakers who transported whiskey and rum from large ships anchored in Rum Row, an area outside territorial waters located 3 miles from shore at first, but then increased to 11 miles. Small powerboats loaded up the cargo and proceeded to rush to shore without meeting up with a Coast Guard ship. Most of the locals’ small boats were faster than the Coast Guard vessels so many, many of the rumrunners avoided arrest.

I knew a pair of rumrunners, one of whom became very famous.

Charlie Travers was a young, intelligent man who saw rum running as an opportunity to get rich. And he did. Charlie had a boat called “Black Duck” built at Casey Boatyard. It was 50-feet long and powered by two airplane engines.  Aircraft engines were made for high RPMs—perfect for a rum-running vessel.

Black Duck was capable of doing 30 knots that was unheard of for a smallish boat.

“One night, ‘the Duck’ entered Narragansett Bay when it came upon a Coast Guard cutter moored to a bell buoy. The ship’s searchlight illuminated Travers’ boat and her crew. After some crazy maneuvering by Charlie’s helmsman, the Coast Guard opened fire with a machine gun.”Cukie Macomber

The gunner had orders to shoot into the stern of the Duck but instead got carried away and swept the pilothouse killing a trio of crewmembers. When word got out, angry crowds protested outside government buildings all over the United States. Their cry was that the country’s military killed unarmed civilians.

Investigations were launched and finally the Secretary of the Treasury— who was also head of the Coast Guard— stated that the killings were justified. Put out of the rum-running business by the tragedy at sea, Charlie retired to his dairy farm where he helped many people survive the Great Depression. I remember the Black Duck—the rum-runner powered by airplane engines— retired to a special dock Charlie had built in the Westport River. According to other sources, the Black Duck was retrofitted by the Coast Guard into a patrol boat that scoped out rumrunners along the Westport coast.”

Editor’s note: The Westport Historical Society had a presentation on September 26, 2013 where a panel of four people monitored by noted Westport author Dawn Tripp provided a fascinating glimpse into rum-running in Westport during Prohibtion.
